The races have been postponed until Monday, owing to the weather. The Walking Match. At the Garrison Hall last night the twentyfour hours walking match commenced. The competitors were Scott, Brooks, Delaney, West, Malcolm, J. Henderson, Drummond, Allen, and Haggerty. After accomp’ißhing about twenty-three miles, Allen and Haggerty retired, the pace being too hot. At ten this morning Brooks he i walked sixty-three miles, Henderson fifty-eight, Drummond and Scott fifty-seven each. Later. At 2 p.m., the distances covered were— Henderson, 77 miles ; Drummond, 74; Scott, 73 ; Brooks was disqualified. Cr- Fish’s Proposal. Or Fish, the Mayor elect, has given notice for the next meeting of the City Oouuo'l that the Mayor should be elected by the Councillors, acd that, in order to test the feeling of the citizens on the question, a peb’icite should be taken. [pee peess agency.] WELLINGTON, November 29. The Cable Steamer. The cable steamer Agnes sailed for Nelson at five this morning, but was obliged to anchor in Worser’s Bay owing to strong S.W. gales. Parliamentary—Members Honorarium. About half-past two morning the committee reduced the members’ honorarium by 10 per cent. It is anticipated, however, that the whole question will be brought up again, WANGANUI, November 29. Police News. The Maori prisoner Hori Pene, who escaped frem gaol yesterday, has been sentenced to six months’ additional imprisonment. The Justices said that the punishment would have been heavier but that the insecurity of the gaol yard was a positive temptation to prisoners to escape. Walter Deoken, for robbery from a board-ing-house, has been sentenced to three months. DUNEDIN, November 29. A Sad CaseA woman named Pearson applied to-day to have her six children committed to the Industrial School. She stated that her husband had pawned everything in the place for drink and had finally deserted her. The police intimated that the Industrial School was so crowded that the children were actually poisoning each other by being overcrowded. The case was remanded until Monday, to see if they could be received into the Benevolent Institution, The magistrate gave the mother some money to relieve her pressing wants. GEAHAMSTOWN, November 28. A Cruel Master. At the Court to-day Eobert Trotter, a settler, was fined £1 and costs for filming an apprentice taken from the Naval Training School. The indentures were ordered to be cancelled, TIMAEU, November 28, The Breakwater. The contractors for the second section of the breakwater have commenced work. WANGANUI, November 28. An Escaped Prisoner. At five this afternoon a Maori named Hori Pene, serving a sentence for horse stealing escaped from gaol. His absence was soon discovered, and the warders and police started in pursuit. His capture is largely attributed to the plucky conduct of some lads who followed him and kept him at bay until the arrival of Warder Eedmond, who received him. DUNEDIN, November 28. The show to-day wae attended by about 2000 persons. It rained almost continously, and the ground was trodden into a quagmire. The Walking MatchThe twenty-four hours’ walking match for the championship of the colonies commenced at the Garrison Hall this evening. A great deal of interest is felt in the competition. Austin has laid out a track, twenty-two rounds of which makes a mile, and ho has been chosen judge. Accident. An accident occurred this afternoon on board the steamer Wanaka. While a sling of oats was being lowered into the bold tbs sung
broke, and the bags fell on Henry Johnson one of the seamen, who was underneath in the hold. The injuries are believed not to be serious.
