Captain McGillivray, of the s.s. Wanaka, sighted a large vessel off Otago Heads last evening. She ■was so far out that he could not tell whether she was coming North or making for Port Chalmers. The Esther, Captain Davis, arrived yesterday from Picton, whence she sailed November 25th. Northerly wind and thick fogs were met with. The s.s. Hnia is to leave to-day for Kaikoura, Wellington, and Foxton. The Cland Hamilton is to he here on Monday, to sail for Melbourne via Newcastle, the West Coast Porta, and Wellington. , . . . __ The brig Emily was berthed at Peacock s Wharf yesterday, the Star of India at No. 3, the Victoria At No. 3, and the Esther at Peacock's, PORT OF SUMNEE. Arrived —November 28. Blackwall, ketch. 23 tons, Morland, with limestone, from Amuri. EVIDENCE ON THE LOSS OP THE SCHOONER LAUREL. [press agency.] Wellington, November 29, The Collector of Customs took the following Additional evidence regarding the loss of the schooner Laurel: —John Gerver, mate of the vessel for three years, stated that on the 30th of January last, when going to Waitara, the schooner struck a reef within five miles of that place, remaining tabou tthree minutes. Their centre-board was Acuttwo feet down and she made no water. When fbparrived at Waitara she was unloaded, took in vallast, and sailed for Greymonth. Fifty miles off %hat port ho discovered water about three inches above the ballnst. The leak was discovered near the centre-post, and he stopped it temporarily with pieces of old guernsey. He tried to take the pieces out in port afterwards, but could not. When he heard of the accident, he at once sot it down to the «entre case opening ont again.
