THE LYTTELTON MAGISTRACY AGAIN.
To the Editor of the " Ghhe." Sib, —I must ask of you to give space to a few words about our magisterial matters. I dislike anything approaching persecution of a publio officer of factious grumbling, bu the continual neglect of law businessjhere, and consequent delay renders forbearance no longer a virtue. Lyttelton is supposed to be provided with a resident magistrate, and is actually charged with the support of one, no doubt, by the Government in the estimates for that particular department, but neither the supposition nor the charge alters the fack that we have no such magistrate. Mr Bee wick is nominally R.M. for us, and no doubt, were he endowed with übiquity, he would sit at Rangiora, Kaiapoi, and Lyttelton at 11 a.m. daily, but, lacking that gift, when Kaiapoi hasn't his services Rangiora or some other place has, Lyttelton falling in for an occasional visit. Of course no blame attaches to Mr Beswick, under the circumstances, unless that of accepting the magistracy for Lyttelton without complying with the custom of mating his residence here ; but I wish to point out,, sir, that there is need of a change being made, and very great need too. As has been pointed out before, an important port such as ours is must be provided with a magistrate resident h ere — on o who can be found when wanted. I have, &0., A SUFFERER. LytteLon, 26th November, 1879.
