CANTERBURY FARMERS’ GRAIN AND PRODUCE STORE COMPANY.

A mealing of the shareholders in the above company was held at the Corn Exchange yesterday at 2 p.m. Mr Thomas Bruce was voted to the chair. The Chairman stated that the meeting of the shareholders had been called to receive the liquidator’s statement. It was with feelings of extreme regret he had to inform them the company had been driven into voluntarily winding up. The report previously furnished by the directors had so fully assigned the reason why this step had to be taken, that it was therefore unnecessary for him to go over the ground again. He would, under such circumstances, confine himself to asking the liquidator to submit his report. Mr William Bateman, the liquidator, stated that he regretted the position of the company, as no pains had been spared by the gentlemen who had so praiseworthily piloted the company up to a certain point, but their spontaneous exertions had come to nought through the laches of the Crown law officers and the head of the Public Works Department of the late Government. He would now proceed to read the statement he had prepared Corn Exchange, Christchurch, November 24th, 1879. To the shareholders of the Canterbury Farmers’ Grain and Produce Store Company Limited, in liquidation. Gentlemen, —Ton are called together in terms of the following notice, which appeared in the “ New Zealand Gazette” of the 23rd October last. Bateman, Liquidator. The Liquidator then read the following detailed account, showing how matters stood:—

W. M. Batsman, liquidator of the Canterbury Farmers’ Grain and Produce Store Company Limited. The above is the liquidator’s account, showing how the voluntary winding up of the Canterbury Farmers’ , Grain and Produce Store Company Limited has been conducted. This is to certify that I have this day concluded the inspection of the same. David Cbaiq, inspector appointed at the general meeting of shareholders held on the 16th day of October instant. Dated at Christchurch this 22nd day of October, 1879. Mr W. H. Peryman moved, and Mr Peter Eider seconded, the following resolution: — “ That the affairs of the Canterbury Farmers’ Grain and Produce Company Limited, have been fairly wound up.” Carried unanimously. A vote of thanks was agreed to by acclamation to the chairman and board of directors, the hon. treasurer and secretary, for tne time and trouble they had so faithfully and gratuitously given towards the clerical and other duties devolving upon them in connection with the company. In reply, the Chairman (Mr Bruce) said— That the non-success of this undertaking was entirely attributable to the apathy of the head of the Public Works Department of the late Government, and not to any want of zeal or shortcomings on the part of his co-directors or himself. They had, all with their hon. secretary, worked hard in a good cause, but he was sorry to say without any good outcome. He could honestly declare that had the undertaking been carried out, it would have been a great commercial success, as well as a great boon to the agricultural community of Canterbury. I Great cheers.] The chairman said ho would conclude by announcing that the sum divisible, 5s 4d out of 10s per share paid, would be payable after tomorrow. The meeting terminated.
