SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Sydenham. Borough Council was held on Monday evening, when there were present—Councillors Brown (in the chair), Charters, Langdown, Hall, Nioholls, White, Pavitt, Andrews, and Joyce. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read, the correspondence was considered. Letters were received from the Department of Justice regretting the Government could not comply with the request re an R.M. Court for Sydenham ; from Christchurch representatives in Parliament with assurances of their sympathy for Canterbury re removal of Commissioner of Hallways to Dunedin; from the Christchurch Drainage Board, as to rates ; from the secretary of the Gas Company requesting payment of £3l 10s, with reference to which it was resolved —“ That the amount, less cartage, should be paid into Court if the company took legal proceedings.” The manager of the Bank of New Zealand stated that £916 3s 2d had been paid into the credit of the borough. Applications were received from Messrs J. Bichards and J. Whitelaw for the appointment of assessor to the Council, and it was determined to call for tenders. Several letters wore received from the works committee, finance and by-law committees. The report of the finance committees was to the following effect: —Receipts, &c., £14602s 2d; expenditure, £760 Is sd; credit U'« ce at the bank, £1743 Os lOd. The report having been received and adopted, Mr Charters moved, in accordance with notice—- “ That this Council hears with regret the expressed intention of the Government not to push forward the Redistribution of Seats Bill this session, more especially in face of the promise made by the late Government and the various candidates for Christchurch, and respectfully urges that the same may be introduced this session, in order that Sydenham may bo as speedily as possible represented in Parliament, and that copies of the foregoing resolutions be forwarded to the Christchurch and Heathcote members. ” The resolution was carried, and several other matters of a routine character having been dealt with, the Council went into committee to consider the provisions of the new Bill to amend the Municipal Corporations Act.
