METROPOLITAN MEETING—IB79. Third Dat. Patron —His Excellency Sir Hercules Robinson, K. ; stewards, Messrs P. Delamain, L. Walker, J. Stndholme, F. Kirabell, E. Clogstonn, H. H. Prins, Hon. W. Robinson ; judge, Mr M. Stndholme; starter, Mr J, Campbell; handicapper, Mr H. P. Lance ; clerk of the course, Mr E. W. Millett; clerk of the scales, Mr S. Qarforth ; hon. treasurer, Mr G. G. Stead. The weather for the third day was anything but inviting, as showers of rain fell at short intervals and prevented anything like an attendance. This was to be regretted, as from the liberal bill of fare provided by the 0.J.0. a good day’s sport was anticipated. The Christchurch Plato was the first event on the card, and for this Mr Bay’s second string, Hornby, was an absentee, having been scratched in the earlier part of the day. After the Cup race this was looked upon as a good thing for Mr Griffith’s colt, as the only opponents he had to meet were Templeton and Grand Duchess, but the result proved that the old home was too much for his juvenile opponents, as he led the whole distance, and won comfortably by two lengths, Mr Walters’ aristocratic-looking filly second, and Betrayer third, four lengths off. Christchurch Plate of 150 sovs, added to a sweepstakes of 5 sovs each. Second horse to save hia stake. Entrance, 5 sovs, to go to the fund. Winners of weight for ago races in one event, since Ist August, 1879, to carry the following penalties—of 200 sovs, 51b extra; of 500 sovs, 71b. Penalties not to he accumulative. Maidens at starting allowed—for 3 yrs, Sib ; 4 yrs, 101 b ; 5 yrs and upwards, 111 b. Once round and a distance. Mr R, Ray’s b h Templeton, aged, Ost 71b (R. Ray) 1 Mr Walters’ ch f Grand Duchess, 3 yrs, Ost 81b (Taylor) 2 Mr E. G. Griffiths’ hr c Betrayer, 3 yrs, 7st 111 b (T. Clarke) 3 Betting—Even money on Templeton, 5 to 2 Grand Duchess, 5 to 4 Betrayer. The lot were got oil to a fair start. Templeton, who appeared full of running, being the first to taka the load, Grand Duchess who was hard held coming second, and Betrayer, who got off badly, third. In this order they passed the stand, the Duchess and Templeton passing Redwood’s making the pace a clinker, Betrayer still in rear. At Ford’s Betrayer went up the Grand Duchess, but could not stay with her, and had to fall back. At the turn into the straight, the Duchess got on even terms with Templeton, but died away. Coming down the straight it was evident that the Duchess had had quite enough of it, as Taylor was riding her, while Bob was taking it easy with

the old ’un. Betrayer here made hia effort, but there wag nothing in it, and he had to content himself with third place, Templeton beating the Duchess comfortably by two lengths. Time 3min. 4isec. For the Publicans’ Steeplechase all the fire entries were goers. The Agent and Little John were the most fancied, though Robin Hood had a following. Little John justified his bakers good opinion by winning the race from Agent by a couple of lengths. Silverstream, who was well in it for a good part of the race was thrown out by his jockey falling at the hurdle near Ford’s. Publicans’ Steeplechase Handicap of 75 sots , added to a sweepstakes of 5 sots. each for acceptors. Second horse to save his stake. About two miles, over such country as the stewards may direct. Mr D. O’Brien’s b g Little John, 5 yrs, lOst ~ _ _ ~ , (S. Osborne) 1 Mr P. Butler a ch g Te Whotu, aged, list 71b (A.. Lyford) 2 Mr P. Butler’s ch g The Agent, 6 yrs, 12st 71b ... ... ... ... (.Steward) 3 Mr J. Lunn’s b g Robin Hood, aped. lOst (Clifford) 0 Mr T. Lyford’s b g Silverstream, aged, lOst 91b (T. Lyford) 0 Betting—2 to 1 Agent, 2tol Te Whotu, 4 to 1 Little John, 5 to 2 Silyeretream, 3 to 1 Robin Hood.

A capital start was effected, Silverstream taking the lead over the first hurdle, followed by Agent, Te Whetu, Little John ; Robin Hood baulked and went round. At the hurdle opposite the stand the horses crossed the timber in the same order, Silverstream appearing full of going, and Little John pulling double. At Redwood’s hurdle Silverstream still led, with Little John second. Agent and Te Whetu, in the next division. At the jump before the double Little John took charge. -Silverstream threw his jockey, and though he was mounted quickly, his chance in the race was gone. Te Whetu and Agent now came up, the latter waiting on the former, and they went 'in this order to the turn, the two being close up. The last hurdle but one was taken by Little John in the lead, with Te Whetu next, and Agent trying close up. Coming up the straight, To Whetu tried conclusions with Little John, but the latter had most foot, and won by two lengths. For the Metropolitan Handicap seven weighed out, Pinflro and Betrayer being the absentees. Hornby was made the favorite for this event, though Mr Walter’s colt, by Tradncer—Yatterina, had many friends, particularly aa he was lowest in the weights. The race resulted in another win for the clever Foul Play, who has certainly showed himself to be a weight carrier of no mean order. The pace was a clinking'one throughout, and the finish between Mr Ray’s colt and Mr Mallook’s horse one of the prettiest seen for many a day. Metropolitan Handicap of 100 sovs., added to a sweepstakes of 5 sovs. each for acceptors. Second horse to save his stake. Entrance, 3 sovs., to go to the fund. Weights to be declared by 7 p.m. on the second day of the races. Acceptances by 9 p.m. on the same evening. One mile and a half Mr J. W. Mallock’a hr h Foul Play, 5 yrs, 9st ... ... (Derrett) 1 Mr R. (Laertes) 0 Mr A. Keith’s b g Soukar, 5 yra, 7st 61b 0 The start being opposite the stand there was great difficulty in getting the horses into line. Soukar played up considerably, and when the flag fell to a very|indi£ferent start, of which Libeller had all the best, Soukar was turning round to come up. Libeller cut out the work, with Homby close up, York nulling double third, Foul Play lying fourth. In this order they ran until Ford’s was reached, when Atlantic came up, but was soon compelled to retire. At the turn into the straight Hornby deprived Libeller of the lead, Foul Play, who was admirably ridden by Derrett, coming into third place. As they came up the straight, the quartette. Libeller, Hornby, Foul Play, and York, were all in it, and the two fir«t under the whip. At the distance, Hornby and Fonl Play came out from the rest, and a grand set to ensued to the post, Mr Mallock’s colt ultimately winning by a short half length, Libeller a good third, the rest in a cluster.
