The Weather. At Tapanui a severe cold and frost is doing considerable injury to the crops, especially to the potatoes. Shocking Occurrence. At Palmerston, yesterday evening, a daughter, aged five, of Mr John Hewitt, a settler, was burnt to death during its parent’s absence. AGENCY.] WELLINGTON, November 14. The suspension of James Grindell, interpreter, has been rescinded. GRAHAMSTOWN. November 14. A man, name unknown, has been brought from Ohinemuri charged with the committal of an unnatual offence. Albnrnia shares are selling at 565. AUCKLAND, November 14. News has been received in town of the complete destruction by fire of two stores attached to Gibbon’s saw mills, Otawa Creek, near Awhitu. Nothing was saved. The buildings were insured in the North British for £350. WELLINGTON, November 13. Sudden Death. Mr Thomas Young, formerly interpreter to the House of Representatives, and latterly Judge in the Native Lands Court, died suddenly at Otaki. DUNEDIN, November 13. Otago UniversityThe results of the annual examination of the Otago University, hold during the last week, were declared this evening. Six students passed in the first class of mental science, each securing seventy-five per cent of marks. At a meeting of the University Council, it was resolved to commission Professors Huxley and Wyville Thomson to appoint a successor to Professor Hutton in the chair of biology, and as curator of the Museum. Port Chalmers Harbour. The harbor-master to-day, presented a raply to the remarks of the Port Chalmers improvement committee.
