METROPOLITAN MEETING—IB79. Second Day—Thuksday. Patron, His Excellency Sir Hercules Robinson, K. ; stewards, Messrs E. Delamain, L. Walker, J. Studholme, P. Kim bell, E. Clogstonn, H. H. Prins, Hon. W. Robinson ; judge, Mr M. Studholme ; starter, Mr J. Campbell; handicapper, Mr H. P.Lance ; clerk of the course, Mr E. W. Millett; clerk of the scales, Mr S. Garforth ; hon. treasurer, Mr G. G. Stead. The weather on the Cup Day was anything but promising, as the lowering clouds presaged rain. This no doubt militated against a large attendance, as the Cup Day is par excellence the ladies’ day, and of course where so good a lead is shown the sterner sex are not slow to follow. Though heavy and darklooking, the rain held off in the early part of the day well, and the weather was really splendid for racing, if people could only make up their minds that it was not probable that the duck of a bonnet or the new dress would be snoilt. The day’s sport opened with the Railway Plato, for which there wore ten goers, On Dit and Midge being the absentees out of a field of twelve. Hilarious, from his performance in the Welcome, was made a favourite, but he was never in the hunt, owing to a wretched start, indeed almost a leave at the post. Chancellor was thought to be the correct thing by some, as he looked in rare buckle. Mr Ray’s mare, Maritana, had a following, good race by half a leng£fi , ,“l2fiS by winning a Billingsgate, who ran well on the first day) coming into third place, with Tim Whiffler second. Railway Plate of 100 sovs. Entrance, 5 Bovs, weight for age ; for two-year olds and upwards. Four furlongs. Mr R. Ray’s hr m Maritana, aged, Bjt 111 b, (Wattie) 1 Mr J. Smith’s b c Tim Whiffler, 2 yrs, 6st (Taylor) 2 Mr W. Walters’ b c Billingsgate, 3 yrs, Bst ... (Nolan) 3 Marie Antoinette, Adamant, Edward James, Sir Garnet, and Sir George also ran. Betting—2 to 1 Chancellor, 3to 1 Hilarious, 3 to 1 Maritana, 3 to 1 Billingsgate, 3 to 1 Tim Whiffler, 5 and 6 to 1 the rest. After a little preliminary fiddling at the post and two false starts in which the colors of Hilarious, Adamant, and Mario Antoinette wore conspicuous, Mr Campbell sent the lot away to a very bad start, of which Hilarious got all the worst, as he was lengths behind the rest. Tim Whiffler’s colors wore the first to show out of the ruck, with Maritana, Chancellor, Sir George, Marie Antoinette, and Sir Garnet in the order named. This position was held until after the turn into the straight, Hilarions being hopelessly in rear. Coming for home Wattie took a pull on Maritana, and she assumed charge of affairs with Tim Whiffler second, and Billingsgate, who ran a good horse, third. In this order they passed the stand, Montana scoring the Plate to Mr Ray’s credit by about half a length, a head between second and third, the rest except Hilarious, in a cluster close up. Time—54Jseos. Of course the race of the day was the Cup, for which four faced Mr Campbell, Of these Bob Bay had two, Hornby and the old horse Templeton, the others being Mr Griffith’s grand looking colt Betrayer and Longlands. Mr Ray declaring to win with Templeton, put him at once to the top of the betting, and 2 to lon him was freely laid. Betrayer, after his showing such bad form on the first day, was not much sought after. Longlands was not in the hunt after passing Redwood’s, and it was left for Ray’s pair and Betrayer to fight out the race to a grand finish, ending in a victory for Mr Griffith’s, perhaps one of the most popular Cup wins ever seen on a Canterbury course. Ray did his best to win with his pair, but the colt had a bit the best foot of Hornby, and landed the stake by half a length. Canteebuey Cup of 500 sovs, added to a Sweepstakes of 20 sovs, second horse to receive 50 sovs from the stake; third horse to save Lis stake. 3 yrs, 7st lib ; 4 yrs, 9at; 5 yrs, 9st 71b; C yrs and aged, 9st 91b. Fraser’s ch g Longlands, 5 yrs, 9st 71b (Jones) 4 Betting—2 to 1 on Templeton, 2 to 1 aget Hornby, 4 to 1 agst Betrayer, 6 and 8 to 1 agst lionglands. Mr Hay declared to win with Templeton. After a short delay at the start caused by Hornby declining to face the starter’s flag, the lot wore got away to one of the prettiest Cup starts ever made. Ray’s pair soon cut out the work, Templeton leading the way, with Hornby, Betrayer, and Longlands in the order named. Passing the stand the first time they ran as follows Templeton, 1; Hornby, 2; Betrayer, 3; and Longlands half a length in rear. At Redwood’s gale it was plain to see that Longlands was not in it, as ho tailed off, leaving the trio to go on at a 1 clinking pace, .At Ford’s Templeton and Hornby had a clear two lengths lead from 1 Mr Griffith’s colt, who was capitally rid- 1 den by Hudings. Coming to the turn 1 findings called on Betrayer, and ho gamely answered the call, as ho came up to Hornby, 1 who was lying second, challenged, and passed j him, and then wont up to Templeton. The old horse could not foot it with tho young'un, 1 so Bob allowed Hornby to come up and fight ' out the finish. Mr Griffith’s colt gradually got 1 tho] lead, and till nearly opposite tho j stand, a grand race ensued, terminating in a win for Betrayer by a short half length. Ternpleton third, Longlands three lengths in roa;?. Time, 4min. 7seo. * The steeplechase was a perfect fiasco.
