NORTH Y. SbUIH, ” The above match was commenced on Saturday, but owing to the English mail going out, h the game was not begun until 3 p.m. The North was first to bat, and succeeded . ( in putting together a respectable score of 153. . Secretan and J. Fowler were first to represent . them, but the latter, after placing 10 to his a credit, was easily caught by Allen at point. Ashby was not in good form, but Secretan, a although hitting rather high, scored freely from both bowlers. At last Ashby lifted one £ from Turner, but Ross made a good catch. , Alpe failed to score, and soon afterwards Secretan fell to a straight ball from Neilson, _ which was rather faster than usual. His a score of 59 contained many good hits, but he was let off on three occasions, twice when ho had made 36. Watson and O. Frith kept the field moving, and it was not until the former bat ran up 30 that he was bowled by Turner off his leg. His score comprised a good square leg hit for 5, a 4, three 3’s, &c. Frith continued to score, but after making a fine leg hit for 5, was bowled by Hartland. Boss was the only other player who reached double j figures, being not out for a carefully played 11, It was nearly six o’clock before the j South commenced their innings, when the light was bad. Ollivier... 1 0 1 0 0 CHRISTCHURCH CLUB v. SYDENHAM ; YOUTHS. i The Sydenham Youths suffered their first . defeat at the hands of the Christchurch Club , on Saturday. The match begun on the Ist inst., when one inninga apiece waa got through. The Christchurch went in firat, and made 82, Turner, Wheatley, and Anaon being the chief contributors. The Youths put together 71, Jones playing a long and careful innings. • Smith showed very good form. In the bowling department Wheatley got hia six wickets for 18 runs. On Saturday the game g waa played out, but waa remarkable only for the complete and unexpected collapae of the % Youths. Wheatley was well on the spot, and got seven wicketa for aa many runs. Luak got two wicketa without a run. Only o three of the team managed to score, and the whole innings closed for 20, leaving the Christchurch victors by 34 rime. AVONBIDE. A match was played on Saturday between the Avonside and Bohemians, which resulted in a victory for the former, whose total for the first innings was 28 runs, and six wickets down for 65 in the second innings, R. Hislop making 24 runs. RICHMOND v EAIAPOI. A match was played between the above clubs on Saturday, at Eaiapoi. Richmond went in first, and played steadily, and were not disposed of till they had reached 70 runs. Eaiapoi then went in, and were all out for a total of 17 runs. As Eaiapoi would not go in again, Richmond commenced their second | innings, and soon ran up 60 runs, thus leaving ( their opponents 113 runs to get to win, but . they only managed to get 59 runs, thus leav- , ing Richmond victorious by 54 runs. For the former, Wenlock 21, Eldridge 10, and £ Fisher 10, batted well; and Wright 35, and £ Smith 12, batted well for the latter. Eldridge e and Eisher for the former, and Goodeve for r the latter, bowled best. At 1 p.m., 'the members of both clubs had an excellent luncheon, provided by the Eaiapoi Club, at 1 a the Pier Hotel. Before separating, hearty cheers were accorded, and thanks were given t for the kindness of the Eaiapoi Club in giving thiir Christchurch friends a pleasant day’s recreation. g COUETENAYtT SHEFFIELD, ° A match was played at Eirwee on Friday, 7th ult., between the Courtenay and Sheffield clubs, resulting in a victory for Courtenay by . an innings and 43 runs. The principal scorers for the Courtenay team were—J. Ramsden £ 17 and H. V. Anson 20. A. McNae and H. Enight made 11 and 9 respectively for the losing team. t
