ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
At the meeting on Monday night, the Mayor stated Government had re r uaed to increase the endowment of land already made to the borough, but had contented to issue Crown Grants for the reserves in the borough. He had arranged with authorities for widening railway crossings, and also for filling up hole opposite Quill's Hotel. Letters were read from several Municipal Councils, agreeing to co-operate in the proposed association, and also a communication from Rangiora Borough Council refusing to join. It was resolved that section 503, opposite Baldwin's Hotel, should be granted for a site for a station and bell tower. A report from the retrenchment committee was read and approved, from which it appeared that by temporarily doing without an engineer, and making the town clerk collect the rates without an increase of salary, a considerable saving might be made ; and it was resolved to carry the proposed reforms into operation as speedily as possible. Three months" notice was also given to the inspector of nuisances, on the score of economy. Mr H. Friedlander's tender for the valuation of the borough at £4O, was accepted.
