RACING IN AUSTRALIA

THE QUEENSLAND CUP. The Queensland Cup, a handicap sweepstakes of 5 sovs. each, with 250 sovs. added. Second horse, 30 sovs.; third horse, 10 sovs. 2 miles. Mr W. H. Kent’s hr h Napper Tandy, by Maribyrnong—Oremorne, by Tattendon, 4 yrs, 7st 41b (Cuff) 1 Mr J. Finnie’s b h Sydney, by Gemma di Vergy, 5 yrs, 9st 71b ... (E. Blacklock) 2 Hon. J. P. Bell’s b m Lilia, by Silver Fox, 5 yrs, 7st 91b ... _ ... ... ... (Sealy) 3 Melbourne, King Cole, Beadsman, Ehadamautbus, The Earl, Irish Stew, and Ulysses also ran. Betting-3 to 1 agst Sydney, Beadsman, and Lilia; 4 to 1 agst Melbourne, 5 to 1 sgat The Earl and Ehadamanthus, and 6 to 1 agst King Cole. At the third attempt they got away on very fair terms, and as soon as they had settled into their places, Napper Tandy’s colours could be observed in the front, and he forced the running all along the back stretch, closely followed by Lilia, Ehadamantbus, and King Cole, the rest in a cluster, Irish Stew last, and evidently out of it. Coming past the stand at the first time, Napper was still in command, Lilia and The Earl being bis immediate attendants. Going round the bend Sydney began to work his way through his horses, and ran up second, going as strong as a lion. At the half-mile Eoat Lilia was again second, and the three eing well away from their field. Even thus early there was evidently nothing else in it. As they swept into the straight, Sydney again took second position, and went on in hot pursuit of Napper, but the latter was kept going, and won, with not very much to spare, by about three-quarters of a length from Sydney ; Lilia third, three lengths away. Melbourne, who came very fast at the finish, was fourth, and Beadsman fifth. Time, 3min SS^seo.
