MEDICAL MAN FOR RAKAIA.
A meeting was held in the offices cf Messrs McKerrow and Co., on Saturday evening, for the purpose of considering the course to be adopted to induce a properly qualified medical practitioner to reside in the district. There was a very fair attendance. Mr O. H. McLean was voted to the chair. The chairman stated the object of the meeting, and spoke at some length on the absolute necessity existing for the residence at Rakaia of a properly qualified doctor, as the delay in obtaining medical attendance from Ashburton, a distance [of eighteen miles, was so groat, particularly during the night and on Sundays when no trains ran, besides the expense, as in many instances to cause the friends of the sufferers to run great risk. On the motion of Mr John Mann, seconded by Mr Hartnall, it was resolved—“ That the following gentlemen:— Messrs E. S. Coster, D. G. Holmes, John Lambie, L. Mangham, 0. N. Mackie, 0. 8. Mackie, O. S. Allington, W. Hartnall, E. Chapman, O. A. Hardy, W. Saunders, and the mover (J. Mann), bo written to, asking them to canvass their respective portions of the South Rakaia, Mount Hutt, and districts, to ascertain what amount could be guaranteed to a medical man for one year, and that they be requested to communicate the results of their efforts by the 20th of November next.” Mr McLean was unanimously elected to act as secretary.
