DIOCESAN SUNDAY SCHOOL ASSOCIATION.

The annual meeting of the above association took place at eight last evening, in St. Michael’s schoolroom. A preliminary service in connection therewith was held in St. Michael’s Church, at half-past seven o’clock. The chair was taken by his Lordship the Primate, and on the platform were the Dean of Christchurch, the Bevds. H. 0. M. Watson, B. G. Penny, and H. E, East. About seventy persons were present. His Lordship, in opening the proceedings, congratulated the meeting on the very satisfactory service for Sunday school children held in St. Michael’s Church on the previous afternoon, fully 1200 children having attended. Referring to what might be done in future years, he said he hoped that a teachers’ service might he hold on the Monday following the children’s gathering, at which united prayer for the success of their work could not fail to be of great benefit. He hoped, too, that annual returns would be made by the various schools to the association, showing the progress made, or otherwise, during the year. The Sunday school was now the only way in which the Church could impart religious instruction to the children, although he hoped the time would come when daily religious instruction would be again given to the young. He thought great good would result from an inspection of the various Sunday schools in the diocese, one advantage from it being uniformity of teaching, not otherwise attainable. He was glad to say that the Rev. W. 0. Harris was willing to undertake the duties of such office, and those schools desiring inspection could gain it by communicating with Mr Harris. His Lordship then called on the Rev. E. G. Penny to propose the diocesan Sunday school committee for the ensuing year. The Rev. E. G. Penny moved —" That the following bo the committee for the ensuing year : —Clergy : The Dean of Christchurch, the Rev. H. B. Cocks, H. E. East, E. Knowles, W. A. Pascoe, and H. O. M. Watson, Laity: Messrs W. G. Brittan, T. M. Gee, E. J. T. Ford, J. M. Heywood, H W. Packer, and H. E. Webb.” This being seconded and put to the meeting, was carried unanimously. The Rev. H. C. M. Watson moved —“ That Rule 6 be altered as follows : That honorary members subscription be ss, instead of 10s 6d, as at present.” Seconded by the Dean. The Eevds. E. G. Penny, 0. Bowen, T. Flavtl, and Mr W. G. Brittan deprecated 'any alteration, and on the motion being put to the meeting it was declared lost. The Rev. H. B. Cocks read a paper entitled “Is Sunday school instruction possible ?” Mr T. M. Geo also read a paper on Sunday school work. After a vote of thanks to these gentlemen had been carried, the meeting was closed by the Primate pronouncing the Benedition.
