THE SIX THOUSAND EMIGRANTS.
The following vras the exact answer of the Colonial office to Sir George Grey’s telegram of February 15th, informing the Imperial Government “that six thousand able-bodied emigrants could at once find permanent and profitable employment in New Zealand in addition to large numbers whose passages are being paid by the colony” : —“ Mr B. Wingfield to the Agent-General. Downing street (no date). Sir, —I am directed by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 20th instant, transmitting the copy of a telegram received by you from the Premier of New Zealand, stating the ability of that colony to absorb 6000 able-bodied adults from the unemployed working classes. On the receipt of a oimilar telegram from Sir George Grey, the suggestion of the New Zealand Government was communicated by Sir Michael Hicks Beach to the Local Government Board, for the information of the Boards of Guardians, who have tho power of promoting the emigration of poor persons at the cost of the rates at their disposal. The Secretary of State does not, however, anticipate that any considerable number of desirable emigrants would be likely to be sent out in this manner, and, as at present advised, her Majesty’s Government do not propose to take any special measures for promoting emigration to tho colonies.—l have, &0., Edward Wingfield, Sir Julius Vogel, K.0.M.G.”
