ENGLAND v. COLONIES. The season, although nominally opened on the previous Saturday, was only really commenced on Saturday last. The ground looked in splendid condition, and although soft from recent rains, played well. The weather was all that could be desired, and there was a fair muster of players on the ground, although the Association match was not commenced until late in the afternoon. The play for an opening day was good, the fielding being in most instances free from mistakes, except the ball was generally returned too low to the wicket. England won the toss and elected to bat, but very little resistance was offered to the groat array of bowling talent opposed to them. Ashby batted well, making one splendid drive for 5, four 3’s, seven 2’s, and singles in his score of 38. Secretan made a fine cut for 4, and, with Morice, was the only other batsman to obtain double figures. The total only reached 86, and at five o’clock the Colonies commenced their innings. The first three wickets fell for 29, but J. Fowler and A. Ollivier played ont time, the score being then 62. J. Fowler having 23 and Ollivier 14 to their credit. The following is the score : ENGLAND. COURTENAY. The Christchurch Club played their first match with their old friends the Courtenay Club, and scored a win by 35 runs. The visitors went first to the wickets, and put together 40. Soma good play was shown by T. H. Anson and O. G. Parker, but everyone else acted strictly on |the defensive. The first half-dozen of the Christchurch men went for about as many runs, but Johnston and Marshall broke the spell and made a stand, and the advantage was followed up by the rest of the team. The fielding on both sides, with a few exceptions, showed a considerable improvement on last year. RICHMOND >. CHRISTCHURCH CLUB, A match was played between the Richmond 0.0. and Christchurch 0.0., and resulted in a victory for the former by 6 runs. The scores were—The R. 0.0., 61 ; 0.0.0., 55. The batting of Eldridge for the former and Washer for the latter, with 18 and 32 not out respectively, and the bowling of Foster and Eldridge, Marr and Grant for the former, and Thomson, J. Lusk, Hooper, and Washer for the latter were very destructive. MIDLAND V. SYDENHAM YOUTHS. The above match took place on the M.C.O. ground on Saturday last, and resulted in a draw. The M. 0.0. were the first to appear at the wickets, and it soon became evident that they would make a good stand. Ultimately they were disposed of for the total of 121, of which number Thompson contributed 24, Fawcett 32, and Whiting 26, the other wickets falling for a mere nothing. From the bowling strength which this team was snpposed to contain, it was thought that an easy defeat was in store for the Youths, but the result proved otherwise, as when time was called the Youths had scored 78 runs for the loss of four wickets, the batting of Fowke 24 (not out), and Jones 13 being very pretty. Rowe was the most successful bowler for the M. 0.0., whilst Smith and Row proved the most effective for the Youths. KAIAPOI 0.0. The opening match of the Kaiapoi 0.0. wa played on Saturday on the field kindly granted by Mr Hurse for the use of the Club this season, between elevens of the Married y. Single members. The match was decided in one innings, in which the former side, captained by Mr Wright, scored 82, Mr Merrin making a good score of 19, Mr Wright 17. Although the single members included several good players the fates were against them. Their total score was seven wickets down for 58 when the ma’ch was declared drawn. Bates made 25 not out. A good wicket is being prepared, and a fair club is expected to be formed here.
