PROPOSED NORTHERN BOILING DOWN FACTORY.

A few of the residents interested in this movement met at Benn and Oo.’s office on Saturday afternoon, to consider the report of the provisional committee re the advisableness of promoting a limited company to carry out the project. The attendance was very meagre. Mr Benn (in the chair) said he feared at the present time the public were not sufficiently interested in the idea to secure the success of such a factory, doubtless owing to the present depression of the money market. He said that meeting was called to hear the results of the labors of the committee, and also to hear what chance there was of starting the affair. Ho thought if the stock were purchased with discretion, such an establishment would prove a great boon, especially to the farmers of the district. There wag every prospect this year of the feed being luxuriant, and the quantity of fat aheep in the district would be far in excess of the butchers’ requirements, and with every prospect of their getting cheaper. The people in the district, by sending them to their own pot, would be benefiting themselves instead of outsiders. Mr Courage said he should much like to see a factory of the kind in the district, but would rather it was started by private enterprise. Ho would not like to take shares. Mr Homersham thought the proposed factory would bo a benefit to the place, hut would not like to guarantee its success. Mr Ensor said he was very much of opinion that it would be a failure. Mr Benn said Mr Andrews had sent him up an estimate of the cost of the machinery and plant, which would be £270. He had also received a calculation from Mr Ensoi’s brother, making the cost of the actual plant £365, He wished to remark, as he had set the ball rolling and was convinced of the ultimate success of the project, that though in the meantime the thing was not much thought of, yet, if at any time the public would assist him, he would do his best to further the object. Mr Courage said that the thanks of the district were certainly due to Mr Benn for his trouble in ventilating the matter. After a vote of thanks to the chair the meeting closed.
