PUBLIC BUILDINGS CLOCK.
The tumt clook in the new G .°7 ern " ment Buildings, lately imported by Messrs Coates awl Co. of this city, and erected by that firm, iB now quite completed. The plans for the purpose of illuminating the dials by gas at night has been supplied, and nxea m a manner that reflects great credit upon the contractor, Mr G. P. Daye, of Colombo street. The gas is conducted from the mam building, and taken through one of Suggs patent double governors to a regulating cock ; after which it arrives at an unique valve, whioh is worked direct by a lever at the back of one of the dials. Having passed this valve, the gas is carried round the tower by an ingenious arrangement to light the four dials, each dial being illuminated by a standard bearing six arms, and containing fourteen burners. There is also an admirably arranged bypass, to prevent the gas ever being turned entirely out. The clook was illuminated last night for the first time, and could be seen from a considerable distance from all four sides of the buildings.
