RETURNS RELATING TO CROWN LANDS.

WELLINGTON, October 4. A return of land disposed of without sale in the several provincial districts in the colony for the year 1878, gives the following totals : —Auckland, 80 acres; Hawke's Bay, 43 acres 10 roods 11 perches: Taranaki, 1323 aores 2 roods 25 perches ; Wellington, 30,601 aores 3 roods 38 perchss ; Nelson, 2 roods 24 perches; Marlborough, 1006 acres 2 roods ; Canterbury, 17,007 aores 11 roods; Westland, 164 acres 2 roods 8 perches ; Otago (exclusive of Southland), 252 acres 24 perches ; Southland, 84 acres 2 roods; total, 54,861 acres 1 rood 23 perches. Tho return of lands sold for cash or money scrip in each provincial district of the colony for the year 1878 is : Auckland—Cash received during year, £43,429 ; total area alienated since foundation of colony, 2,197,978 acres ; total cash received, £358,767; land in hand open for sale, 2,261,585 acres. Hawke's Bay—Cash received during year, £29,324; alienated since foundation of colony, 996,424 acreß; cash received, £442,712 ; land open for sale, 32,196 acres. Taranaki Cash received during year, £29,324 ; alienated since foundation of colony, 276,485 aores; total cash, £146,414; land open for sale, 10,377 acres. Wellington—Cash received during year, £16,292; alienated since foundation of colony, 1 802 788 acres ; total cash, £718,936 ; area open for sale, 27,144 acres. Nelson—Cash received during year 1878, £3053 ; total alienated, 1,025,614 acres ; cash received, £357,136} land open for sale, 5,859,886 acres. Marlborough—Cash received during year, £2111; total alienated, 846,312 acres; total cash received, £268,356; open for sale, 2,153,687 acres. Canterbury—Total cash received in 1878, £961,896 ; area alienated since foundation of colony, 3,333,549 acres ; total oash received, £5,716,946; area open for sale, 5,369,477 acres.

Weßtland—Total cash received during year, £1752; total alienated, 141,376 acres ; total cash, £56,096 ; open for sale, 246,444 aores. Otago (exclusive of Southland) —Cash received during year 1878, £98,854; total alienated, 2,200,406 acres; cash receivod, £2,012,826 ; open for sale, 106,551 acres. Southland Cash received during year, £90,208 ; total area alienated, 1,006,218 acres ; total cash received, £1,022,044 ; land for sale, 1,598,857 acres. Total received for lands sold for cash or money scrip in 1878, £1,252,992; on deferred payment, £29,368. Lands held under depasturing and other leases (except gold-mining) from Ist January to 31ft December, 1878—For depasturing purposes, 1072 runs, with an area of 13,109,955 acres; rents and assessments, £106,886; agricultural leases, 132,338 acres; rents, £13,756. For leases for mineral and other purposes, 18,586 aores, with a rental of £3305.
