TELEGRAPH OFFICERS' HOURS.
WELLINGTON, October 4. Some enquiry having been made as to the exact terms of the reply given by the Post-master-General to Mr Stevens' question regarding telegraph officers, the following may be taken as an accurate statement of the intentions of th' department. It is proposed to do away with the system of overtime at all large stations, but not until such time as the staffs are so strengthened that no operators need be called upon to do more than eight hours' duty during one day. It is hoped that this system will be more acceptable to operators generally than the system now existing. The staffs of the following stations have already been brought up to the standard to enable overtime to be suspended from the Ist October :—Hokitika, G-reymouth, Timaru, O&maru, Auckland, Nelson, and Grahamstown. It is believed that doing away with overtime, and thus curtailing the hours of officers, will have a beneficial effect in diminishing the per centage of sickness. The extra duty on Sundays is from 6 to 7 p.m., and for this no overtime will be allowed, and Sunday duty will be taken alternately.
