AUCKLAND, October 3. The case against Maohattio, for treating in City West election closed. The magistrate reserved judgment until Thursday. Several witnesses to-day proved that sandwiches and beer were consumed pretty freely in Dr. Wallis* committee room, people apparently helping themselves at will. Mr Hurst was not in any way connected with the case. All hope of finding the young men, George and McKenzie, capsized in the boat, is abandoned ; they are doubtless drowned. FEATHERSTON, Octobers. A fire broke out at Faber's Hotel in an upstairs room a little after 9. It is supposed to have been oaused by a stove pipe getting heated. The building was totally destroyed with a considerable quantity of stock and furnituro. The Bank of Australasia was saved, although very much damaged. Considerable damage was done to the stock and buildings of Gilpin and Parsons through hasty removal. The insurance on Faber's Hotel was £BOO, on furniture and stock, £7OO, said to be in the National office. WELLINGTON, October 3. Mr John Henderson, representative of Brogden's firm, and a well-known civil engineer, died this evening of serous apoplexy. He has been ill only a few days, but has not been conscious for the last forty-eight hours. TIMARU, October 3. A telegram received from Wellington states that the Government will at once prooeed with the second section of the Opawa railway extension in order to give work to the unemployed in this district. An information has been laid against Mr John Manchester, memh#r of the Waimate County Council, for voting for passing an acoount in which he was interested. DTJNEDIN, OotoberS. The investigation into the charges against Waters was. concluded to-d»y. Prisoner's
counsel called only one witness. Mr Watt committed Waters for trial on the charges of arson and murder. Mr Dennißton, prisoner's counsel, applied to the Bupreme Court for a special jury. The application was granted. A pool of hlood and an exploded revolverwere discovered near the Battray street jetty this morning. It is not certain whether a murder or practical joke has been committed. Probably the latter. The Forfarshire is in quarantine. The Mayor of Lawrence informed tho Oounoil that £SOOO at 7 per cent, would be lent to the borough by the G-overnment. This is Mr J. C. Brown's constituency.
