TEACHERS’ RETIRING ALLOWANCE.
Dereference to the question of allowing teachers under the State education system an allowance on retirement from service, the local IBoard of Education communicated with the Government some little time since. At ‘yesterday’s meeting of the Board, a letter was road from the department in Wellington, .-stating that there was no fund upon which • such a charge could be made. At the same time a letter was read from Mr Ray, an old -schoolmaster, who has retired from active service, repeating the application ho had formerly made to be considered in this direction, as he was without means of support. Mr !Ray also pointed out that, if possessed of sufficient means to return to the old country, he should be enabled to take advantage of institutions existing there to meet coses like his, there being nothing of the kind in this colony. The chairman of the Board agreed that the question of providing a sort of insurance fund in connection with the education system was one that might be considered, and it was resolved to submit the present case to the Government in the meantime.
