EDUCATION BOARD.
The ordinary meeting of the North Canterbury Education Board was held yesterday afternoon at the usual hour. Present— Messrs Inglis (chairman), H. J.Tancred, Kev. Charles Eraser, H. B. Webb. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed.
A statement was read of accounts paid and transactions entered into by authority since last meeting of the Board. A report-was submitted from the inspector on various schools within the educational district.
A letter was read from Mr Watkins, suggesting the extension of the holidays of the Normal School for another week, owing to certain alterations to the school building. Agreed to. The Secretary of the Education Department, Wellington, wrote intimating that there are no funds from which payments of retiring allowances or compensation to teachers con be made.
Mr John Grigg, of the Thames, wrote enclosing a copy of a poem, “My own New Zealand Home,” which had been set to mnaio. He suggested that -it might be introduced in the schools throughout the colony. Consideration of the matter was held over.
A letter was received from Mr Bay in relation to his application for retiring allowance or compensation* pointing out that he had no means of - support, and could not, under present circumstances, go to England, where he would be enabled to take advantage of institutions existing there to meet such cases as his, of„whioh, there were none in this colony. The Chairman thought this was a question the Board might fairly bring under the attention of Government —that of providing some fund to meet such cases.
The Rev. Eraser suggested that part of the bonus to teachers might be impounded as a payment towards such fund for insurance. ’ It was resolved to bring the matter under the attention of'Government, with the view of ascertaining whether some means could sot be devised to meet cases of the character indicated.
It was resolved to give leave of to those members of the Board who were absent on business in Wellington. A number of routine matters in connection - with school management and the maintenance of numerous buildings were considered, also ' tenders for repairs accepted. The Board then went into committee to . consider proposed schemes of salaries and • augmentation allowances. With regard to . the latter, the following scale was adopted ;
In the case of a few teachers who are now - receiving a -eomewhat larger bonus than the above scale would allow them, it was decided that no reduotion shall be made till after the - end of the March quarter, 1881, in order to give them-the opportunity of entitling themselves to a continuance of their present bonus ■ by improving their position on the class list.
