LYTTELTON REGATTA.

The newly elected regatta committee held their first meeting on Thursday night in the Colonists’ Hall, Lyttelton. The meeting was not as fully attended as was looked for, and the opinion was expressed that the public meeting held a few nights before, and the first committee meeting, had been characterised by such evidences of apathy as to keeping up the regatta to give but little encouragement to those who were disposed to bear a share of the work of carrying it out. It is proposed to make the regatta of 1880, if possible, better than any of the twenty or more which have preceded it, and it is hoped that those interested in perpetuating this old time institution at the port will respond liberally. At the meeting held on Thursday night, Dr. Macdonald occupied the chair. Mr H. Allwright was elected commodore, and Mr B. Paflett vice-commodore. The following gentlemen were appointed collectors —for Christchurch Mr P. Cunningham, and Messrs H. McLellan, R. Puflett, B. Macforlane, and O. A. Rich for port. A programme of events to be competed for was considered, and will come up for discussion at the committee meeting to be held next week. The representatives of Messrs Shaw, Saville and Co. have handed to the commitee a cheque for £25 in lieu of the cup promised by Shaw, Saville and Co last year. The committee had paid that amount over to the winner of the prize some time since, so the receipt of the cheque referred to, added to the balance of last year’s fund in hand, has increased the latter to something like £6O. The delay in the cheque being handed over was caused by the time involved in corresponding with Messrs Shaw, Saville and Co. Instead of making their donation in the form of a silver cup, Messrs Shaw, Saville have intimated that for the future it will be a subscription of ten guineas to the fund.
