THE CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEES.
Siys the "TimaruHerald"of Saturday:—"The Government, finding that the general election has gone against them, are already resorting to the worst possible means in order to turn to turn their minority into a majority. They are endeavoring to buy over those among the Opposition or independent members whom they suppose to be open to a bribe. They have abused their powers aa a Government shamofully in this way during the election?, and now they hope to be able to employ the same tactics with equal success in the House. Their first effort in this direction is a pledge to Mr Bunny, member for Wairarapa, to propose him for the chairmanship of committees. The House will have none of Mr Bunny. In the first place we do not believe for a momont that any large section of the Government party would consent to that member's nomination. Nothing but extreme pressure, we are sure, would induce men like Mr Montgomery so far to sacrifice their self-respect, and it is a perilous process for any Government to drag their best supporters through the mud. But even if the Government prevailed on their party, as a party, to accept Mr Bunny's candidature, the Opposition will still have a large majority againßt it, and they will be able moreover to produce such an array of facte and arguments as will make the Government only too glad to withdraw the nomination as speedily as possible.
