THE LYTTELTON ELECTION.
The contest for the representation of the Port was being conducted very quietly to-day. There was no public demonstration of excitement on the part of the electors, the enthusiasm and ebullition of feeling being reserved for the " declaration," which will be made by the returning officer at 5.15 p.m. Both of the candidates—Mr H. P. Murray-Ayniley and Mr H. Allwright—were watching the progress of events, no doubt hopefully. The admirers of the former predict a glorious victory, while Mr Allwright's friends are equally confident that the other side hain't the " ghost of a show." The general sentiment seems to be that a very full vote will be polled, and the result be very close.
