At another declaration of the poll at noon, the returning officer said that he had gone over the papers again carefully, and would now declare the numbers as being :—Bain, 305 ; Feldwick, 295. There were several informal votes, mostly in Mr Feld wick’s favor, the bulk consisting of nine voting papers, the corners of which, with the numbers on them, had been torn off, thus invalidating the vote. The official declaration, as the act provided for forty-eight hours’ notice, would be postponed until Thursday. The announcement was received quietly. The election excitement is dead already. AUCKLAND, September 1. Serious complaints are made of tampering with the Waikato electoral roll. Three boys from the training ship, who ran away on Friday, were pursued by the constable at Onehunga on Saturday. They crossed the mud flats, and took refuge on a small island, the constable getting bogged several times while endeavoring to follow them. They were ultimately captured. At the Acclimatisation Society to-day letters were received announcing a further supply of white fish from San Francisco. A large number of men were put on to work to-day on the first section of the Wel-lington-Foxton Railway at rates of pay varying from 5s to 7s per day ; but n great many were refused work, while many objected to work at the rates offered. TIMABU, September 1. Sergeant Burtenshaw announces the recovery of the remains of Smith and Morrison, lost in the snow in Mackenzie Country. An inquest was held on Saturday and the funeral to-day.
