NEWTON AND INVERCARGILL ELECTIONS.

[Bt Tblegbaph. AUCKLAND, September 1. Mr Swanson, a Government supporter, has been returned unopposed for Newton. INVERCARGILL, September 1. The election to-day created immense excitement, and parties were better defined and more zealous and determined than on any previous occasion of the kind. Neither pains nor expense were spared to command victory, the Anti-Greyites working desperately to let the colony seo that Sir George Grey’s speech of Friday night was not all potent.. It was felt it would be a very close affair. On the whole the proceedings were orderly, although some of the Greyites inclined to yelling and hooting and one or two little scenes occurred. As soon as the poll closed a crowd began to assemble at the hustings, and increased to 1500 people. More than an hour elapsed before the Returning Officer appeared and made the announcement amidst breathless silence : Bain ... ... ... ... 305 Feld wick 303 The shout that followed was deafening, and was mixed with counter groans and hisses. Both candidates addressed the assembly in cool and moderate tones. Mr Feldwick was evidently affected, and implied that, after all, some mistake in the returns might have been made. The ballot papers were, however, gone through twice if not three times. The official declaration of the poll will be made tomorrow.
