THE AKAROA ELECTION.
[Bt Tei/kgbaph.J AKAKOA, September 1. The election of a member of the General Assembly for the electoral district of Akaroa took place at the Court-honse, Akaroa, at noon to-day. Mr Aylmer, Returning Officer, read the writ, and called upon any elector present to propose a candidate. Mr F. W. Williams, the chairman of the Akaroa County Council, said it was ti.eir privilege and duty to elect a representative for the district in Parliament, and he had been asked to undertake the duty of nominating one. _lt was quite well known that in the coming Parliament, questions of the greatest importance for the future welfare of the colony would have to be considered. The matter of how the five million loan was to bo distributed was an important one to them, and they should make sure that they got their full share towards making the railway now begun to the harbor. He would at once propose Mr William Montgomery as a fit and proper person to represent the district in the now Parliament. Mr C. J. Waeckerle, the Mayor of the borough, said it gave him the greatest pleasure to second the nomination of Mr Montgomery. He believed this was the fourth time he had been before them, and he was too well known to require any eulogium of his. Ho had always given every attention to the wants of the colony and also to those of the district. He begged to second the nomina’ion. [Cheers.] The Returning Officer asked if any elector had another candidate to propose, and no other being proposed, declared Mr Montgomery duly eiectedMr Montgomery, who on coming forward was received with loud cheers, begged in the first place to return a vote of thanks to the Returning officer, and would ask them, as he proposed saying a few words to them, to adjourn to the Town Hall, ns it was iucouv=nient standing in sun.
The electors then, to the number of about 100, adjourned to the hall, and at the request of Mr Montgomery, hia Worship took the chair ; Mr Montgomery then reviewed the political situation at some length, and resumed his seat amidst loud cheers. No question being asked, a vote of thanks to the Mayor concluded the proceedings.
