THE GENERAL ELECTION.

Nomination bob Cheistchuech. The nomination of candidates for the City of Christchurch took place to-day at noon in the Oddfellows’ Hall. There was a largo attendance of electors, the hall being filled. Mr Q. L. Lee, the returning officer, read the writ, and called for nominations. Mr Pratt nominated Mr E. 0. J. Stevens. Mr Evans seconded the nomination. Mr O. W. Turner proposed the Hon. E. Richardson. Mr A. B. Kirk seconded the nomination. Dr. Turnbull proposed Sir George Grey, and Mr Alport seconded the nomination. Mr Olephane nominated Mr S. P. Andrews. Mr J. Piper seconded the nomination. Mr Perks proposed Mr J. W. Treadwell. Mr G. Willmer seconded the nomination. There being no other nominations, Mr Lee called upon the candidates to address the electors. Mr Stevens said that if they looked at his past career they would find the best guarantee *f the fidelity of hie present professions. He did not intend to go in for any speech on this occasion, as he would address them iu the various centres of population, and had already given them a full outline of his policy. The other candidates having briefly addressed the electors. The Returning Officer called for a show of hands, which resulted as follows : Stevens ... ... ... ... 90 Richardson 90 Grey 90 Andrews... ... ... ... 85 Treadwell 30 The Returning Officer declared the show of hands to be in favor Messrs Stevens, Richardson, and Sir George Grey. Mr Olephane demanded a poll on behalf of Mr 8. P. Andrews. The Returning Officer announced that the poll would be taken on the 10th inst.,between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
