NEWS OF THE DAY.
Arrivals. —The New Zealand Shipping Company, limited, has reoeired advice by cable of the arrival of the ships Mendoza, from Napier; Lorraine and Boyne, from Lyttelton; at London prior to the 30th ult. Land Tax Coubt. —Mr G. L. Melliah, 8.M., held a Court for the hearing of Land Tax objections this morning for the Biccarton District. Justices of the Peach. —Complaints have frequently been made of the scandalous waste of time through the confirmed habit of magistrates taking their seats on the Bench long after the regular hour for the commencement of business. This was bad enough, in all conscience, when the Besident Magistrate was the only offender, but now the worthy J.P.’s, who are scattered broadcast over the city, have followed suit, and cannot be had for love or money, be the want ever so great. This morning, with several heavy cases on hand, involving the necessity of lawyers, reporters, police, a large number of witnesses, to say nothing of the defendants, wearing out their patience in Court, not a Justice of Peace could be obtained until eleven o’clock. Messengers were scouring about to hunt one up, and, although there are over thirty of these gentlemen gazetted for Christchurch, not a single one was available. It is high time some steps were taken to compel these gentlemen occasionally to do what they undertook when they were honoured by having the letters J.P. tacked to their names. The Chaplin-Obboene Company. —Under the leadership of Miss Bose Osborne and Mr J. D. Chaplin, a dramatic company will open in the Gaiety Theatre this evening. The names of the company comprise many well known to Christchurch playgoers and several who are new here, but who will no doubt be as successful here as they have been elsewhere. The opening piece will be “ Hamlet,” in which it will be recollected Mr Chaplin made such a success during his last visit here. Comic Opeba Company. —There was an excellent audience in the Oddfellows’ Hall, on Saturday night, when “H.M.S. Pinafore ” was repeated. The opera was performed in the most spirited manner, encores being frequent. When all the characters are so well sustained, it is almost ungracious to individualise, but a noticeable feature was the remarkably distinct and admirable recitative of Mr Biccardi. It is a somewhat rare accomplishment with many operatic artistes, and the gentleman in question furnishes an example worthy of imitation. His articulation is perfect. Miss Leaf was in splendid voice, and rendered the music of Josephine in the most fresh and delightful manner. As presented by the Comic Opera Company, “ H.M.S. Pinafore ” is full of “ go,” and seems likely to keep the boards for some time yet, as its popularity seems unabated. Tonight, Arthur Sullivan’s celebrated operetta, “ Trial by Jury,” will conclude the performance. Theatre Eoyal. —There was no change in the bill on Saturday night at this place of amusement. The matinee was well attended, and the efforts of the children in “ Patchwork,” “ The Kickers,” and “Hash” were highly appreciated and applauded. Obituaet. — By the San Francisco mail on Saturday intelligence was received of the sudden death, in Glasgow, of a very old resident of Christchurch, Mr J. Sheriff, sen., who died in that city from heart disease. St. Luke’s Parochial Entertainment. —The second of the above entertainments will (be given on Tuesday evening, commencing at 3 p.m. The Orangemen —The usual monthly meetI 1 ing of Lodge No. 3, C.T.B. will be held toj morrow evening in the Hall, Worcefter street, at 7.30.
