Radium, for Canning Island. New Zealand Shipping Co., agents. Cleopatra, brigantine, 92 tons, Clarkson, for Greymouth. C. W. Turner, agent. The Chimborazo, of the Orient Line of Steamers, sailed from Plymouth on the 14th August, full of passengers. The Company are also placing an extra steamer, the City of London, on in September from Sydney and Melbourne to London. The Union Steamship Company’s s.s ; Arawata arrived yesterday at 9.30 a.in. irom "Wellington ana Nelson. Sho left Wellington at 3.30 p.m. on Monday and passed Capo Campbell at 8.45 p.m., having experienced strong head winds and across the straits. Moderate weather was met with thence to port. The Arawata sailed for Port Chalmers ye t0 Tho 7 Cleopatra for Greymonth, Onward f°r Auckland, Australian Sovereign for Newcastle, and the barque Adelaide for Fanning !slnnd, cleared yes terday, the last-named vessel in ballast to load euano for Cork or Falmouth for orders. The Union Steamship Company have instructed the masters of all steamers sailing under the flag that the following starting signals shall m future bo used —“ One ” long and cue short blast of the whistle 15 minutes before starting; one long and ••two" short blasts 5 minutes before starting; and "one” long and ‘‘three short blasts immediately before casting oil from the bound ships from Port Pirio, South Australia, appear to bo meeting with unusually unfavorable weather. On August 14th the following vessels were out from that port the number of days stated—the Ismyr out 178 days, Hons Glide, 106 days, Messina, 137, Windsor Castle, 152 days. HE SCHOONEE GAEIBALDI OF LYTTELTON, Particulars of the wreck on the Hokitika bar of the schooner Garibaldi were published a short time n r- 0 The vessel belonged to Lyttelton, her owners being Messrs Cameron Bros. Following is the decision arrived at by the Collector of Customs at Hokitika, after holding the inquiry “ That when rounding the (end of the north spit of the Hokitika river the master of the Garibaldi hugged it too closely, and the vessel grounded there. From that point she became unmanageable, ' and was cast up by the sen on the beach. It appeared that within a few days of the accident the shoal had been marked by a beacon rod and white flag, but since the north channel of the river had become unworkable it had been discontinued. I am, therefore, of opinion that the accident is to a certain extent attributable to this fact, for had the shoal been marked by a white flag the accident might have been avoided. As it is. if the master of the Garibaldi is to blame at all for not keeping his vessel in the proper channel, the fact of the shoal not being marked by a white flag is a sufficient excuse, ns he might naturally have concluded that by not seeing the beacon there was sufficient water for the Gonbaldi. Under these circumstances I do not consider it necessary te proceed any further in the matter. Mr E. S. Agnew, nautical assessor, concurred in this report. The Garibaldi was insured for £6oo her cargo for £l5O. The vessel and cargo.were sold for £l6. SHIPPING TELEGEAMS. Bluff, August 26. The Albion arrived at 3 p.m. She left Melbourne at 1.20 p.m. on the 20th. Arrived at Hobart Town at 9 a.m. on the 22nd; left at 3.30 p.m. Experienced light northerly winds and fine weather. She brings 40 saloon and 33 steerage passengers for all ports. Sho sails at 9 p.m. for Dunedin. Auckland, Angnst 20. _ The City of Sydney has arrived. She landed Sir Arthur Gordon at Paeotogo. Passengers for New Zealand—Mr Wood and wife, Messrs Courtayne, Jones, Palmer, Grace, Blair, Hull, and II steerage.
