Meeting for Women. —A meeting for women will bo held on Monday, the 25th of August, at 2 p.m., in the Sydenham Wesleyan Church. The Search fob Ybnnbll. —Up to the present the exertions of the police in searching for the body of tho missing man have been unattended with success. They have, however had the effect of stimulating the public to come to their assistance. A party of volunteers have arranged to co-operate with tho police on Sunday, when a thorough and exhaustive examination of the sand hills will be made, and the river dragged in every part where there is any likelihood of finding the body. Very great credit is due to the two cabmen, Coker and Horner, who have been untiring in their exertions to assist the police, and have rendered them material aid in the search.
Thbatbe Eoyai,—There was a very large attendance at the Theatre Soyal last evening, when the very clever -juvenile company now performing there gave “ Conrad and Lizette ” and “Patchwork.” Both pieces were admirably played, Master Parlato and the Mieses Tulloch and Pox receiving a liberal ■hare of applause for their admirable rendering of their several parts. This evening, “Struck Oil” will be repeated. The usual matinee performance will take place at 2.30 p.m. English Comic Opera. The English Comic Opera Company, under the management of Messrs Crain and Harding, will make their first appearance in Christchurch on Tuesday evening next. Fibb. —Shortly after eight o’clock last evening the alarm of fire was given, and a large blaze was Been to the eastward. It proved to be a five-roomed cottage in Hantner street, Avonville, occupied by Mr J. Wells. So far as can be ascertained, the facts attending the outbreak of the .fire were that Mrs Wells, becoming aware of the smell of fire, went into her son’s room, where a candle had been left, but was unable, from the smoke and flame, to ascertain anything more than that the room was on fire. Tho;lflamos quikcly spread, and the building was burnt to the ground in a very short time. The house was insured for £l5O and the furniture for £SO, in the London and Lancashire Insurance Company. The fire brigade, under Mr Superintendent Harris, were quickly on the spot, and the water was obtained from the river, but before this was done the building was completely destroyed. The Railway Fire Brigade turned out and proceeded to the Lichfield street station, but their services were not called into requisition. Now that the Railway Fire Brigade have become a part of the city force for extinction of fire, it might be as well to have an alarm at the station, so that the members of the brigade may be mustered as rapidly as possible in cases of fire.
The Abstainers. —A public meeting of Temperance electors will be held on Tuesday evening, in the Templar Hall, Worcester street.
