THE INTERPROVINCIAL FOOTBALL MATCH.
SECOND EDITION
The first of the series of matches to be played by tho Dunedin, Wellington, and Christchurch football teams was commenced, in Mr Anderson’s paddock, at 2.30 to-day. Tho whole series are looked forward to with great interest by the Christchurch public. The Dunedin team was the one to try conclusions with tho Christchurch players to-day. The Wellington men have just arrived per Wanaka, and are to play Dunedin on Monday. With, reference to match, before its commencement, opinions as to which side would win were much divided. Tho Canterbury men were considered as forming a strong team, and looked like making a determined stand, though perhaps not winning the match. The Dunedin men had the advantage of prestige, and their weight even would at all times make them formidable antagonists; besides the manner in which they played together, when last in Christchurch was well remembered. Unfortunately they had lost the services of one of their best players, who sprained his ancle just before they started from Dunedin. Otago won tho toss, and Canterbury took the kick off. The ball soon reached the Canterbury ground, and some very fast and hard play succeeded. In the first half hour Canterbury had to touch down twice in self-defenoe, but nothing was scored. Hamerton, Austin, Murray and others played in grand form. There was a large attendance of spectators. The game was proceeding when we went to press.
