BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Thursday, August 20. The usual fortnightly_ meeting of the Board of Education for the district of North Canterbury waa held at 3.25 p.m. Present—Messrs John Inglis (chairman), Rev. C. Fraser, A. Saunders, A. Duncan, H. R Webb. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The secretary read the business that had been transacted by the chairman since the last meeting of the Board. GOVERNMENT GRANT. _ A letter was read from the Education Department, Wellington, stating that by the direction c f the Minister of Education, the Government had allotted the Bum of .£17,500 to the Board out of the vote of £ 125,000 for school buildings for the services of the current financial year beginning July Ist, 1870. The_ money would be paid by instalments, as might be required to meet the Board's liabilities on account of school buildings. It was requested that the Board would forward from time to time a certificate under the hand of the chairman showing the amount needed, in addition to balance in hand, to meet claims due on account of work done. THE ORPHANAGE. The chairman stated that, in compliance with the request of the Charitable Aid Board, Mr Restell had visited and reported on the Lyttalton Orphanage. REPORTS. The Chairman stated that he had received reports from Upper Heathcote, Fernside, Avon, Balcairn, North Kowai, Governor's Bay, Governor's Bay South, Gebbie's Valley, and Gebbie's Pass schools. ASHBURTON HIGH SCHOOL. A letter was read from Ashbnrton County Council, stating that Mr Wason had resigned his position as a member of the Ashbniton High School Board, and requesting that steps might be taken for the election of a member in his place. The Chairman stated that, at the next meeting of the Board, an appointment would be made to fill up the vacancy created in the Ashburton High School Board by the resignation of Mr Wason. MUSICAL TUITION. Mr J. T. McLeod Smith w-'ote asking that the Board would grant the use of a room in the Normal school, to enable him to hold a class for the tuition of suburban and country school teachers wishing to acquire a knowledge of music. The Board decided that they could not grant the request. KAIAPOI ISLAND. A letter was read from the school committee, stating that a penny savings bank had been established, and that Messrs Need and Brown had accepted the office of trustees. Would the Board sanction their appointment. The Board gave their sanction. TENDERS. The following tenders were accepted for school houses:—Green Park, Mr Gee, .£402 ; East Oxford, Mr Gee, .£56; South Malvern, Mr Buckley, .£320 ; removal of old school at Leeston, Mr Brown, -£ls ; shifting schoolmaster's house at Southbridge, S. Cox, -ClO 10s. Two tenders for the first two schools were received too late. A tender for .£l7 9s Hid was accepted for some repairs required to be done to the master's house at Eaiapoi. BINGSLAND. It was decided to call for tenders for repairs required to the outbuildings of the school at Bingsland. KILLINCHY. Mr Cane submitted plans for a school, library, and master's house, at Killinchy. The Board approved of the plana, and decided to call for tenders. GERMAN BAY. Mr Chappell wrote, offering an acre of land for .£25. on which to erect a side school. The letter was referred back to the school committee, with an intimation that the quantity of laud was insufficient, and the price excessive. MANDEVILI.E. The committee of the Mandeville school applied for permission to let the school reserve. They had an offer of £3 for the first year, and £-1 per annum afterwards. The Board gave permission, and left the matter in the hands of the chairman to make the necessary conditions. GOVERNOR'S BAY SOUTH. The erection of a new water tank was sanctioned. HURTTNTJI. The Board sanctioned the cost of some repairs to the school, but decided not to make any additions to the master's house at present. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. One month's leave of absence from the Beard wa3 granted to Mr W. Montgomery. XAIAFOI. A letter was read from the chairman of the school committee, calling the attention of the B oard to a letter which thoy had received from the Local Board of Health respecting the need of drainage at the back of the Borough school, the estimated cost of such drainage being £ls. The Board decided to allow the works to be carried out. HALSWELL. A report was read from Mr Cane on certain repairs which were required to the school buildings and master's house at Halswell. The Board decided to call for tenders. ROBINSON'S BAY. The Baard granted a small expenditure for planting willows, repairing fences, &c, on the school reserve. SOUTHBRIDGE. A letter was read from the school committee, pointing out the necessity of certain alterations and additions being made to the school on sanitary grounds. It was decided to send the Board's architect o inspect and report on the repairs and additions reqnired. KAIKOURA. A letter was received from the chairman of the Kaikoura school committee, stating there was a great division of opinion aB to the site of the new school and master's house, and requesting the Board to send some qualified person to decide on the matter. Mr Saunders reported to the Board that he had visited the existing school, and the space, locality, and accommodation, were unequal to the requirements of the scholars and master. He stated there was an eligible site available which would suit the convenience of the majority of the scholars, but the committee were divided upon the matter. It was decided that the Board, having had Mr Saunders' report under consideration, are of opinion that the new school should be near the bridge over Lyell's creek, and request to be furnished with a tracing of a suitable site of five or ten acres on the high ground near the public pound, so that the Board may proceed without delay in erecting the necessary buildings. The Board then went into committee, and subsequently adjourned.
