It is aemi-offieially announced that the formal dissolution of the New Zealand Parliament takes place to-morrow. Writs for new elections w :, l be issued on Monday next. Sir George Grey. It is understood that Sir George Grey has altered his determination regarding the making of bis first political address at Nelson. Ho will, it is said, leave hero for Christchurch on the 21st by a company’s steamer,.and not by the Hmomoa. Electoral. The Liberel Reform Association Committee met leit right and selected Mr Hutchinson, the present Mayor, and Mr Fisher, “ Hansard” reporter, as candidates in their interest, promising them the support of the Association. Donations Extraordinary. The following donations have been presented to the Libci ul Reform Association Fund :—S : r George Grey, £ls ; Mr Sheehan, £5; Colonel Whitmore, £5. A deputation from the Association wailed on the Premier and askei him to adcress the members of the Association on Saturday night. DUNEDIN, August 14. Electoral. Mr Macassoy comes out for the city. There w'" be a hot struggle for the Tuapeka seat. The Good Templars bare issued a manifesto givng their votes only to local option candidates. Major Atkinson and his Constituents. HAWERA, August 14. Major Atkinson addressed a large meeting last night. He reviewed past political events, and denied that he had neglected the district. He pledged himself to advocate the reoccupation of the Waimate Plains, and said that Sir G. Grey’s Government had passed no useful measures. Rewi had hoodwinked Sir G. Grey and Mr Sheehan, and Sir G. Grey had no idea of how to cope with the Native difficulty. The speaker advocated public works being pushed on in the district. He was well questioned, and a vote of confidence was passed, there being no dissentients.
AUCKLAND, August 13. Jno. Peter Irvine, gum digger, while sitting in the Wairoa Hotel, suddenly fell back dead. NEW PLYMOUTH, August 13. Two prisoners, Hall, of Dunedin, and a Maori, escaped from gad this morning, but were speedily re-captured.
WELLINGTON, August 13. There are already between 300 and 400 names on the list of members of the newlyformed Liberal Association, It is anticipated that, before the end of the week there will be fully 1000 names on the ? ; st. A meeting of persons willing to form a Bellringers’ Association in connection with the peal coming out for the new St. Peter’s Church was held last night. About twenty-one attended, sixteen or eighteen being old bellringers. A sub-committee was formed to draw up rules for the guidance of the association.
The report of the examiners on the results of the annual examination of teachers in Wellington educational district has just been printed. Forty-two candidates presented themselves, of whom twenty-eight passed and fourteen failed. The examiners state that the work was not so good as last year, the chief faults being thus described :—“ In the grammar papers there was as usual a good deal of bad spelling, and much of the work showed a want of intelligent teaching. The word knowledge was very meagre, and the derivations were seldom given. Also the parsing in many cases was loose and inaccurate. With the geography papers some exceedingly rude outlines of maps were given.” A report was made to the police to-day that two little children, named F. Gotten and H. Preston, aged respectively two and three years, are missing from their homes. The steamer Patea, which left for Patea this afternoon, took up ten of the Armed Constabulary and a number of bell tents. There are about forty more Armed Constabulary in barracks ready to bo sent away as soon as required.
The appointment of return’ng and registration officer for the electoral district of Wellington City, vacant by the appointment of Mr B. Baker to be Resident Magistiate at Wairoa, has been conferred on Mr W. R. James, Mr Baker’s successor as clerk of the District and R.M. Courts here.
Dr. Buller and Mr Travers are bua :l y engaged inquiring into the confiscated lands question, and working up the case of the Maori prisoners. Dr, Br I, er acts as solicitor, and Mr Travers as senior counsel.
George Darrell sails for the south on Friday next, to initiate bis libel action. Mrs Darrell has improved in health. DUNEDIN, August 13. Two judgments were delivered in the Supreme Court to-day, sitting in banco, viz., MacDonald v Proctor (in which the rule to enter a nonsuit was made absolute), and in re Esther Maud Dowling (in which the rule was discharged with costs). The latter is an important decision. The Benares enquiry still continues. Today the carpenter of the Benares and engineer and firemen on board the tug were the principal witnesses. The Land Board met to-day, and Mr O. S. Reeves took his scat for the f ~st time.
A meeting of creditors of T. 0. Eeid was held to-day. The trustee submitted a balance-sheet showing that £3C 10 was unaccounted for. The total deficiency was £7500. It was resolved—“ That the trustee be instructed to take advice as to whether it is possible to prosecute Mr Beid criminally, and if the reply be in the affirmative, that immediate steps be taken in that direction.” A letter having been read from Mrs Beid, asking for help, as she was destitute, Mr Maloney, one of the gaol warders, and a heavy loser by Mr Beid, protested strongly against money being appropriated out of the estate for that purpose, while Mr Beid refused to eat the gaol rations provided by Government, but had his meals sent to him from an hotel close by.
