WELLINGTON, Augußt 12. It is reported that the second Resident Magistrate for Wellington will be Mr Price. Mr Darrell on the War-patE. Mr George Darrell yesterday was serred with a writ for £2OCD at the instance of the proprietors of the "Saturday Advertiser" for an alleged libel contained in a handbill published here. Darrell is about to issue a counter writ against the "Advertiser" for £SC3O. The Botomahana. Cable news from Home states that the new steamer Rotomahana left London on the 9th inst., and it is expected to arrive in Melborune on the 24th of September. PBOM OTTB OWN COBBBSPONDEHT.] DUNEDIN, August 12. The body of a man about fifty years of age was found near Stuart street jetty this morning. He had apparently gone to sleep alongside the water's edge, and had died fiem. exposve. The body has net been identified.
NEW PLYMOUTH, August 11. Messrs T. Kelly and A. 0. Foots are candidates for New Plymouth. Colonel Trimble, Captain Ekeet, and Captain Wilson will possibly stand for the Grey aid Bell.
WELLINGTON, August 11. A deputation waited on the Premier regarding af sisted immigration, and he replied that instructions had already been sent home to put a stop to any further free immigration, excepting single women. The writs for the new elections will probably be issued on Thursday. It has not yet been definitely decided when the writs shall be made returnable.
Mr Eugene O'Oonor is going to contest the Buller with Dr Henry. A large temperance meeting was held in the Arcade to-night. The speakers were Sir W. Fox, Mr Woolcock, and several others. No resolution was passed. The Ghaplin-Osborne company opened tonight to a good house. The second annual meeting of the Working Men's Club was held to-night, when there was a large attendance. The report and balanoe-ahsefc read showed that there were nearly 400 financial members belonging to the club, and that the assets exoood the liabilities by nearly £4*oo. Mr George Fisher, "Hansard" reporter and City Councillor, has announced himself os a candidate for the city. He will address the electors in a few days. The candidates for the Wairarapa are Messrs Beetham and Bunny, the present members, and Messrs Burton, Boys, C. Pharazyn, and O. R. Carter. ASHBURTON, August 11. Mr Joseph Ivess is spoken of as a probable candidate for Coleridge. A meeting of the electors takes place on Wednesday. In consequence of wet weather, Mdllo. Olga Duboin, the Russian pianiste, did not perform. She will do so on Thursday. In compliance with an influentially signed requisition, the Mayor has consented to call a political meeting on Wednesday night, to consider who should be requested to become member for Coleridge. Great interest is shown, and it is considered unlikely that Mr Hart will have another walk over. It is said that Mr E. G. Wright will be a candidate.
TIMAEF, August 11, The feeling against Mr Turnbull is increasing, and people are still more disgusted by his denying that he is a Q-reyite. A very large and powerful party is now formed who are determined to use every endeavor to prove that Timaru does not approve of the present G-overnmont. A requisition has been going round for Mr Turnbull, but many of bis old supporters refused to pledge till they know who is coining forward. Still if; will be very closely contested, as Mr TutnbuH is popular as a private citizen, and has many friends. Neither Mr Wakefield or Mr Belfield ever had the slightest intention of standing, tho former being too safe for Geraldine. Me Studholme stands again for Gladstone, where strong efforts are being made to oppose him by another anti-Greyite candidate. A quantity of large bones were dug out of solid clay at tho railway excavation to-day, fifteen feet below the surface. They will be sent to Dr. Haast for examination. Charles W. Wood was committed for trial on threo charges of fraudulent bankruptcy. Two other charges have yet to be heard. DUNEDIN, August 1L In the Benares enquiry to-day the examination of Captain Thomson, which commenced on Saturday, was continued. Jas. Bussell, the chief officer of the Benares, also gave evidence. The case was again adjourned. Tho Corporation leaseholds in the East Taieri were submitted to auction to-day. Fourteen sections were let at moderate rents. The remainder were passed in. The charge of forgery against Thos. Chalmers Beid. was to-day dismissed by Mr Elliott. Mr D. L. Simpson, engineer to the Harbor Board, and Mayor of Mornington, comes forward for Boslyn at tho ensuing election.
