Lo Loup has been backed for over twenty thousand to win the Melbourne Cup at hundreds to five. Caspian, Secundus and Petrea are also well backed.
There was no performance at the Princess Theatre last night, owing to salaries not having been paid by the management. Three other theatres remain open, and Professor Pepper occupies St. G eorge’s Hall. Uward of £IO,OOO have been paid in duties at the Custom-house in the last week, principally on spirits, teas, boor, and tobacco, iu anticipation of additional duties being imposed.
By the Latitania a number cf exhibits for the Sydney Exhibition arrived, and several foreign commissioners arrived by tho mail steamer.
Tho obituary of the week includes Sir Charles Nicholson, Bart., and Sir Robert Officer, tho latter in Tasmania, where he was for many years Speaker. Since tho removal of prohibition several shipments of cattle hare been received from England. The prices of pure-bred shorthorn stock are now very low. After a long preliminary examination at tho Police Court, Weiberg and Pearce were committed for trial.
Tho lorrikin element has lately been veryprevalent in the streets, and several heavy fines have been inflicted for assault on the police. Fred Villiers, special artist from tho
“ Graphic,” arrived, and proceeded to Sydney. It is believed also that Sir Archibald Forbes will come from Zululand, where ha is at present engaged. In all tho Australian colonics at the present time there is a conflict between the two Chambers. In South Australia a Constitution Amendment Bill has been introduced, containing similar provisions as to tho dissolution of the Council, to those proposed in this Bolony.
