BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The Education Board of the North Canterbury educational district held its usual bimonthly meeting yesterday afternoon, at three o’clock. Present—The Chairman (Mr Inglis), Mr Tancred, Mr Duncan, the Kov. Ohas. Eraser, and Mr Webb. The minutes of the last special meeting and the ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. chairman’s eepobt. The chairman’s report of appointments and expenditure sanctioned by him since last meeting was adopted. inspector's eepoht. The inspector’s report on various schools within the district was briefly referred to by the chairman, who gave a summary of its contents, and it was allowed to lie on the table. LEEBTON. An application was received from Mrs Smith, teacher of the Loeaton school, for a retiring allowance, on the ground of old ago and failing health. Also one from Mr George Peter Kay, to a similar effect. It was resolved to refer both applications to the Government. PENNY BANKS. A letter was received from the chairman of the committee stating that the committee had decided not to introduce Penny Savings Bank in connection with the school. BBPBBBNCB PLANS. ■ An application was received from Mr Cane for payment of his account. The Chairman stated that the applicant had not complied with the terms of the agreement by which he had contracted to complete certain plans and reports within a given time. Correspondence between Mr Cane and the Board with regard to the matter under consideration, was read. It was resolved that the Board decline to pay any more money until the reports wore completed. HEATHCOTE. Tenders were opened for building a school and master’s house for the above district. A complaint was received from one of the contractors that sufficient time was not allowed for country contractors, who had not an opportunity of seeing the plans. Tenders were accepted as follows : —For the school, Mr Hatchard, £442 13s ; for the master’s house, £458 6i. KAIAPOI. With reference to an application for certain work proposed in connection with the above school, the Board resolved that the committee might call for tenders, and further communicate with them. KOWAI PASS, A letter was received in reference to certain proposed alterations and additions to the school in this locality, and it was resolved to call for tenders for a new building in terms of the specifications prepared. EXCOABTON. The committee reported on the condition of this school, making certain recommendations as to the best method of effecting improvements on the school site and the head master’s house.
After some conversation on the proposals embodied in the communication referred to as to the erection of the wall and work on the master’s house, it was resolved to call for alternative tenders for one portion of -the work, the other to remain for further consideration. The remainder of the business was conducted in committee.
