I, in common with many others, thought that no two horses were better treated. Certain it is that they were far more leniently treated, comparatively, than in tho Melbourne Cup, and I must confess that I am greatly surprised that they should have been withdrawn. Tho public evidently considered Chester well in, for ho was the only horse in the Metropolitan that had been backed for money. Haricot and Diqmcd have also been struck out of the Metropolitan, and I believe the pen has been put through their names for tho Hnwkesbu y Handicap.” Tho same writer reviews tho chances of the ■horses engaged in the Hawkesbury and Metropolitan Handicaps, and for the former ho prefers Democrat, Martindalo, and Free Lance, while for tho latter he likes Chester, Democrat, Martindale, Colima, Soothsayer, Braidwood, Caspian, and Belladrum. “ Beacon,” writing in the 11 Leader ” on the Melbourne Cap weights, likes Le Loup, Fishhook, Tocal, Swiveller. Savnnaka, Woodlands, Bosworth, Democrat, Diomed, Warlock, D.rriwell, Tho Czar, Chesterfield, Haricot, Soothsayer, and Tidal Wave.
