PUBLIC MEETING AT SOUTHBRIDGE.

A largely attended meeting was held at Mitchell’s Royal Hotel on Monday, to consider the best steps to be taken to secure the services of a duly qualified medical man who would reside in the township. Mr Chas. Bourn presided. The chairman explained the object of the meeting, which had been called in consequence of the lamentable death of the wife of one of the residents in the township. The attendance showed the interest taken in the matter. He hoped nothing would bo done prematurely, but that endeavours would be mode to arrange with Dr. Chapman, whose services had been so many years at the command of the district, for the attendance of some qualified practitioner which the increase of population and requirements of the place warranted. Several persona present addressed the meeting, some in favor of advertising at once for a medical man, others, in accordance with the chairman’s suggestion, recommending an application in the first place to Dr. Chapman. Messrs Hayes and McKasky, as representatives of the Loyal Orange and Oddfellows’ lodges, guaranteed support to a resident qualified medical man amongst them. The following proposition was made by Mr Stavely, and seconded by Mr Geo. Bright: — “ That it is essential to tho welfare of the Ellesmere district that there should be more than one resident duly qualified man, as the extent of the practice is too much to be properly attended to by one.” Carried. Proposed by Mr Henry Paddy, and seconded by Mr J. J. Elwin—“ That a deputation consisting of Messrs Chas. Bourn, Stavely, and the mover, be appointed to wait on Dr. Chapman, and ascertain if it his intention to appoint a duly qualified medical man to this portion of the district, tho deputation to report to the meeting this day week.” Carried. The following amendment, proposed by Mr Mollraith, was not seconded—“ That a committee he formed to advertise at once for a duly qualified medical man.” A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman, and the meeting adjourned for one week.
