CHRISTCHURCH. 0 Satubday, July 12. r [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.] Dbunk and Disoedeely.—A' woman v. ith t very bad antecedents for sobriety was fined ; 20s. A first offender was fined ss. "Wilful DESTaucrrox. —Bridget Fei.ick s was charged with the wilful destruction of F private property, value 3*, belonging to , Robert Nelson. The property destroyed wji r the window of the cab, in which she was 1 being conveyed to the lock-up. Fined 2<t . and 3s damages. Resisting a Constable. —Richard Buri goyno was charged with resisting Constable Lawler in the execution of his duty. George Smith slated that the accused committed an act of indeccniy in Cathedral square, and resisted the constable who took him to the lock-up. The prisoner was drunk at the time. Constable Lawler corroborated the evidence of the previous witness as to the violence of the accused, who was fined 255. Violent Assault— Charles Physick was summoned for committing a violent assault on Ph'lip Gear, at the Garrick Hotel, on the Oth inst. The case had been adjourned from the previous day. Mr Nock appeared for the defendant. Thomas Orphan stated that ho was barman at the Garrick Hotel on the 9th inst. The complainant Gear, who is in the hospital, was drinking with another man in the hotel on the day in question when Physick came in and addressed some insulting words to Goar, and threatened to pull his nose. Gear put up his hands in defence, when Physick knocked him down Joint Pullen deposed ho was with Gear ; n the Garrick Hotel on the 9th instant. The defendant refused to drink with Qetr, and used insulting language. After oome further words, Physick knocked Gear down, lifted him up, and knocked him down again, and then struck him in the face. The first witness look him to the hospital, and witnefs afterwards learnt that the complainants leg was broken. Richard Brown, warder at the Hospital, deposed that the complainant was admitted into the hospital on the 9th instant, suffering from a simple fracture of the small bones of the right leg. D; fendant was sworn, in his own defence, and told a totally different story, throwing the blame on to the complainant. His worship was of opinion that the bad language first came from the defendant, and that he afterwards threatened to pull the nose of the the complainant, and used brutal violence to the complainant, who is an old man.
