THE SOUTH SEA ISLANDS.
AUCKLAND, July 11. The schooner Fairlie arrived from a cruise amongst the Botumah, Marshall, and other islands in the South Pacific with a cargo of 160 tons copra- She reports Native matters very quiet, no fighting amongst the groups visited, and the Natives peaceably disposed. The Gull also arrived to-night from Levuka with a car no of sugar and maize. She brings Levuka papers to June 29th. The export of cattle to Noumea had been commenced from Fiji by Dr. Brewer, and it is expected that trade will become permanent. tu T^n-das.. ship, from San- Francisco, having been admitted to pratique, was preparing to return. There was little danger of the smallpox spreading. The Lieut.-Governor presented £IOO to be distributed amongst, the officers and crew. David Moss, who rr orntly arrived from New Zealand, was charged at the Police Court, levuka, with forgery and uttering valueless cheques with intent to defraud, and was committed for trial. A woman named Morgan was drowned by a boat accident at Tararunu. A considerable number of articles are being prepared for the Sydney Exhibition, including timber, sugar, coffee, tobacco, maize and peanuts. A_ri;e in the price of cotton induced planters to increase the extent of their cotton plantations. H.M. schooner Alacrity, having completed the survey of the south-eastern portion of the Fiji group, returned to Levuka on the 23rd. H.M.S. Conflict arrived from New Hebrides ou the following morning. J. Cunningham, a passenger from Tevnka by the Gunga, jumped overboard deliberately. A life buoy was thrown to him, and though it rested on his shoulder, ho pushed it away from him. A boat was lowered, but too late to save him, and he was drowned.
