Parfiament is summoned to meet on Tuesday, Bth July, a week earlier than was anticipated, but the length of tho recess and the amount of the legAation to bo done rendered an early re-assembly necessary. Mr Berry has been busily engaged in preparations for the coming session. A banquet is to be given him by the Reform League on Ist July, but it is not anticipated that lie will allude to the Embassy question until the Assembly meets. There are now two elections pending ; one in East Melbourne, where Mr Zox resigned after liia insolvency, and is seeking re-election, having Mr N. Levi for an opponent; tho other at Fjtzroy, where Messrs Blackett and Gray are the candidates. Since Mr Berry’s arrival there has been a cessation of extra Parliamentary utterances. On Monday morning there was a groat demonstration of unemployed in front of tho Government offices, and a deputation interviewed Mr Berry, and presented a petition, signed by over a thousand persons, seeking relict. Mr Berry complained that the practical effect of their friendly deputations was to injure tho party in power, while tho existing Government had done all in its power, by the judicious expenditure of its resources, to make tho whole community prosperous. There was the same proportion of unemployed in other colonies, but only Conservatives being in power there, nothing was said about it in the press. He promised to consult his colleagues, and to appoint a Board to report on tho best means of relieving the present distress. In Adelaide, also, tho Government have had to find work on railways for the unemployed. The weather has been very cold, and soe prevailed in many pasts of the colony. The Australian and European Bank opened its doors last Saturday morning after the t emporary stoppage, and tho number of withdrawals were not beyond the ordinary daily average. A number of the branches are shortly to be closed. The affairs of tho Provincial and Suburban Bank have oome before the Equity Court ia the form of an application tor winding up. The application was dismissed on a technical point, but it is to be renewed by another creditor.

Business is improving, and a better feeling prevails for all descriptions of merchandise. Sugars show a decided advance, and generally there is a healthier tone. The Opera Company is gone to Sydney, and their place is occupied by a London Comedy Company, recently arrived from England, which has been playing with great success. “ H.M.S, Pinafore” still occupies the boards at tho Academy of Mus : c, and Bignold is closing his engagement at tho Princesses. Considerable progress is being made with the Exhibition. It is now assuming large proportions. At a meeting of Liberal electors held at Eitzroy last night, in connection with the pending election, the Minister of Education and Minister of Works were present, but were unable to obtain a hearing;. Tho meeting was otherwise very orderly. The new hall of tho Parliament Houses is nearly completed. It will be opened on tho assembling of Parliament next month. The Her. Thomas Jones, tho popular pastor of Collins street Independent Ohurcli, has resigned in consequence of ill health. His congregation are endeavoring to induce him to withdraw his resignation. The certificate of Captain Shand of the Loch Linnhe, lately from Glasgow, is suspended for six months for drunkenness and misconduct. An extraordinary story has been published to-day of a member of Assembly having attempted to garrote a doctor in Carlton on Sunday night. A summons was taken out against tho member.
