NOMINATION FOR SOUTHERN MAORI ELECTORAL DISTRICT.

The nomination for the election of a member of the General Assembly for the above district, in the room of the Hon. Hori Kerei Taiaroa, resigned, was hold at St. Stephen’s schoolroom, near Kaiapoi, on Thursday last at noon. The Europeans present were Mr A. Mackay, returning officer, the Rev. J. W. Stack, and the reporter for this journal. There were forty-eight Natives present in the room, who formed the chief of the politicians among the Maoris. It was expected up to the time of nomination that there would be four candidates, the fourth being the brother of the late Wi Parata, a resident in the Nelson district, but ho had not arrived before the nomination proceedings were concluded. The Returning Officer read the writ for the return of one member for the Southern Maori electoral district, and then invited the electors to nominate candidates. Those nominated were : Ihaia Tainui (West Coast), proposed by Henaro Mahuika, seconded by Hamiora Tuangau. Hone Paratene Tananuiorongi, proposed by Hone Tare Tikao, seconded by Horomona Tabuna. Taro Teihoka, proposed by Matana Piki, seconded by Hohepa Huria. The Returning Officer then proceeded to read over the names, and explained that a show of hands would be taken. The show of hands resulted for— Taro Teihoka 16 Ihaia Tainui 14 Hone Paratene 6 Henare Mahuika demanded a poll on behalf of Ihaia Tainui, The Returning Officer announced that a poll would be taken on July 7th at the respective polling places in the island—viz., Wakapuaka, Wairau, Havelock, Waikawa, Motueka, Arahura, Kaikora, Kaiapoi, Rqpaki, Little River, Moeraki, Otago Heads, Waikouaiti, Arowhenua, Campbelltown, and Riverton. The proceedings then terminated, as tbo candidates have previously addressed the electors at the various principal places, and a full report of their speeches at the Kaiapoi meeting was published in the Press of May 19th. The result of the polling will probably be made up by the 14th of July, and declared at the principal polling place.
