MR. MACANDREW ON TAXATION.
WELLINGTON, June 21. Replying to a deputation regarding the Seventy Mile Bush, Mr Macandrow said the Q-ovemment could not consider the application for assistance towards the maintenance of roads, as they already had applications of a similar character amounting to over £200,000, and if they granted one they would require to find a million of money for the same purpose. There was only one of two courses, either they must have extensive taxation or borrow more money, but borrowing more money was out of the question for the maintenance of roads and bridges. The present taxation was not sufficient for the requirements of Government. Therefore increased taxation would he necessary, and the sooner the people of New Zealand faced the fact that they would have to rely on themselves for help the better it would be for the colony.
