[fee. tress agency.] AUCKLAND, June IG. A fire has destroyed a three roomed cottage occupied by a farm laborer named Gould, on Mr Morrin's property, Remuera. The building was insured. The Licensing Bench did not refuse the license of the Nevada Hotel on account of an opening in the wall for a supply of liquor to the adjoining restaurant. It granted the license, but notified that in any future case the license would be forfeited. The Bench also intimated (1) that forfeiture will follow three convictions .under the Act; (2) the Bench will not renew a license where there are two convictions within the year ; )3) that the license will not be renewed unless the requisites, reported by the police to be necestary, shall have .been supplied to their satis faction. WELLINGTON, June 18. Captaia Newman has severed his connection with the Union Company. The Governor has expressed his regret, that owing to his absence from Wellington, ho is unable to jresent the school prizes this year. An attempt will be made to get the carporation to relax the by-laws, so as to enable tomj:o"ary wood and iron buildings to be erected, nntil such times as they can be replaced by brick or concrete ones, as required by law. Valuable Discovery of Iron. At the last meeting of the Philosophical S< c ; ety, Dr. Hector exhibited several samples of iron ore, metallic and hematite, found by Mr McKay, of the Geological Department Tle metallic iron was found in a bed fifty feet thick, expanding in places to several hundred. It is supposed to be a continuation of the same bank of iron which reaches the sea at Parapapa. Another form of ore has been diro jvered at Mr Jenkins' coal mine, close to town, containing 40 per cent, of metal, in a form favourable for smelting, end, therefore, of a very valuable description. The Late Fire. Another theory as to the origin of the fire is that some persons had been smoking and had carelessly thrown a lighted match away close to where the fire broke out. The fire is supposed now to have originated in tho gentlemen's cloak-room and, once lighted, the fl*mes quickly ran up the roof by mean 3 of tho hangings. A public meeting of Weeleyans will bo held this evening with the object of raising funds for re-building.

AUCKLAND, June 17. Rewi had an interview with tho G-overnor, at which Mr Sheehan and Major Te Whooro wore also present. The discussion lasted an hour, and was preliminary and private. It will bo resumed at ton to-morrow. Rewi is understood to have stated that if the promises made by Sir G. Grey and Mr Sheehan were kept he would go to Wellington as a Maori representative. A young man, named David H. Wynd, was committed for trial to-day on a charge of obtaining £3O from Colman, a solicitor, on false pretences. A final attempt to raise and bench the Taupo was commenced by means of hydraulic lifts. Tho work can only proceed slowly, and several days must elapse before the result will be known. The contractors to-day obtained the uso of a hundred-ton hydraulic lift from the Harbor Board. Passengers by tho Waikato train to-night report a large firo at Romuera. They could distinguish a burning house. No particulars have reached town. WELLINGTON, June 17. Tho Chamber of Commerce are actively following up tho question of a Harbor R-ard for this port. They hold a meeting to-moirow on the matter, and are to interview tho Premier again shortly on the question. Owing to tho pressure of insolvency business the want of accommodation at the Supreme Court buildings ia very much felt. Tho grand jury room, the barristers' robing room, and the Court itself wero occupied at once by bankruptcy meetings this afternoon. To-morrow is tho last day for receiving land tax objections. It is believed a largo number will bo sent in from this district. Tho Government havo leased the Athccteum Hull for Police Court purposes. Fifty thousand rounds of ammunition were sont to Taranaki by tho Stella. An inquest will be held on Thursday en the late fire. It is rumoured that the Government havo withdrawn tho invitation for tenders for the construction of post, telegraph, and Customs offices. On tho othor hand it is stated that they are going to engage new clerks for tho Customs from the Ist July, in consequence of tho confusion which will probably ensue with tho removal. It is stated that the insurance companies arc prepared to re-build tho Opera-house in wood and iron if tho Corporation grant permission. BLENHEIM, Juno 17. Last nigh tho flax mill on Davies' pro perty, which was at issue in the ejectment case Davios v Bothwell, decided* against defendant last Friday, was burnt down. Tho cause of the firo is involved in mystery. The value of the mill was £l5O, and it was uninsured. An enquiry will be held on Tuesday. TIMARU, June 17. In the Supremo Court to-day, in the case of Franks vTemuka Road Board, claim £I6OO, damages for pollution of stream, the jury returned a verdict for plaintiff for £192 and costs. Judgment was reserved pending the decision of a point raised as to the legal responsibility of the Board. At the same Court, Mrs Ross obtained judicial separation from her hugband, Captain Ross, late of Fairlio creekj on tha ground of cruelty. As soon us the curtain went down at the Princess Theatre this evening a row took place between Signor Morley and his pupils over the way in which tbe latter part of the opera was given. The sounds wore audible in all parts of the theatre. The contract for the Dunedin Railway reclamation works has been signed. The successful tenderers are E. Pritchard and Co , and the amount of their tender is £58,487. Sensational statements are expected in connection with the Atherseum fire. An inquest will take place. An information for embezzlement in connection with the institution is to be heard. The Tapanui railway job may probably enter on another phase. An endeavor is being made to work up an agitation to open a small section as soon as completed. A soiree was given to the Revs. Messrs Bannerman and Will this evening on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Presbyterian Church of Otago. About 600 wero present. The following are the entries for the Seven-mile Handicap at Q-arriaon Hall on Friday, the handicaps for which will appear on Friday :—Claxton, J. Scott, W. J. Burke, B. Burke, J.
