ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
On Friday, about 1.30 p.m., a woman named Elizabeth Dawe attempted to drown herself in the lliver Aron. She was seen by Coni S»' Ls Cleary walking along the east bank of the river on Oxford terrace, near to \ ictoria bridge. Hearing a splash the constable looked round, and saw the woman struggling in the centre of the st: sain, which, at the place where she was submerged, was about two feet six inches deep. The constable at once went in to her rescue and succeeded in bringing her to the bank in a state of great exhaustion. Calling a cab he had the woman conveyed to the police depot, where she had her wet clothes changed, and she wc* placed in a warm bed and restoratives applied. Dr. Coward was sent for and Applied the usual treatment, which quickly bought ho? round. The woman stated in the depot that her husband had left her auA hud gone home in the Stad Haarlem, and the circumstance preying upon her mind, led to her attempting self-destruction. The woman, who said she. lived in Fourth street, Sydenham, _ t£> brought up this morning, before the Resident Magistrate, and the facts haying been gore into, his Worship, after explaining to her tba legal consequences of her rash act, gave her some kiuuly advice, and she left the Court with a female friend why had known her f° r some years.
