KAITANGATA RELEIF FUND FETE.
A meetin g-of the committee in connection with the above was held last evening at the City Council Chambers, Present —-His Worship the Mayor -(in the chair), and Messrs W. Wilson, A. Ayers, Pratt, and W. H, Smith (hon. Bee), (Letters of apology were read from severs! members of the committee who were unable to be present, and who forwarded their views with regard to the disposal of the surplus fund, about which the committee had met to consult. The chairman stated the object of tbs meeting, and read the letter and circular which he had received from Mr J. L. Gillies, the Dunedin secretary to the fund. These have already been published, Mr Pratt asked how the general committee, present and future, was constituted. The Mayor explained that the committee in question had probably been appointed at the public meeting held in Dunedin. Mr Smith said he had -every coiifidenoe in the general committee, and did not think the Christchurch committee should go outside the regulations proposed in Dunedin. There would, no doubt, be other" questions outside that of mining involved in the matter. His own opinion was that the surplus fund should be applied to oases of distress generally. After some dis-. cnasion, the following resolution was carried on the motion of Mr Wilson, seconded by Mr Ayers—" That the committee generally agree with the views contained in the printed circular forwarded to the Mayor of Christchurch, but if they might he allowed to offer a suggestion, they incline to the opinion that any surplus fund should be available, not only for mining casualties, but also for the relief of widows and children left destitute from accident of any kind.” A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the proceedings. _____
