NATIVE AND DEFENCE INTELLIGENOE.
PATEA, Jiue 11,
One hundred and forty Volunteers and seventy cavalry were sworn in at Carlyle. The settlers at several of the little townships about here are organising for the mutual protection and defence of their homes. They seem to have thoroughly settled down to work. Tho Volunteer spirit, is thoroughly aroused, and arming and drilling is tho order of tho day. There is a determined spirit amongst themselves that tho reigning anxiety and suspense should be pub an end to. They feel that all this has been occasioned by the aggressive acts instigated by Te Whiti, and that advantage should be taken by the Government to put an end to the Native difficulty on this coast, as if the Government now give way to the Natives, who are at present intimidated, and allow the volunteering, now thoroughly aroused, to die out, there will bo a good deal of difficulty experienced in attempting to revive it at some future time. There is a strong feeling that Hiroki should bo delivered up, and that the Government should insist upon this, and failing that, that, To Whiti, who has been tho main cause of trouble, should be apprehended, and that the Parihaka den of outlaws and malcontents should be broken up and scattered. It is not considered necessary that there should be any hurried action, but that tho Government should let it be immediately known that they are prepared to see this carried out. If volunteers are wanted for this purpose, numbers will be forthcoming, as it is firmly believed there can be no material guarantee for the peace of the coast until Parihaka is routed out, and tho plains occupied, and the principle that land should pay tho cost strictly enforced.
Tho suspension of farming operations, consequent on the present state of anxiety, has already thrown numbers of working men out, of employment, and the loss to settlors will be very great. WELLINGTON, June 11.
It is reported to-day that tho Maoris have determined to suspend their ploughing operations until after the coming meeting at Parihaka.
