FOOTBALL.

The match on Cranmer square on Saturday was between a picked fifteen and the rest of the C.F.0., the latter mustering a total of nineteen, while the former played with one short of the full number. During the first spell the game was well contested on both sides, and no particular advantage was gained, though the Fifteen once forced their opponents to touch the ball down behind their own goal line. The Club held their own pretty successfully, and gave the Fifteen some trouble for tho first half-hour, but it was pretty evident the latter side would eventually prove too much for their opponents, both the backs and forwards of the Fifteen being composed of the best players in the club. Like the first, hard and close play characterised tho early part of tho second spell, but the superior weight and play of tho forwards on tho Fifteen side was beginning to tell, and the close of each successive scrimmage resulted in a slight advantage to the reds (Fifteen). The ball was finally worked down close to the Club’s goal line, and Lewin managed to run in and get a touch down, a lusty kick from Hartland afterwards converting it into a goal. Another touch down for the Fifteen was then got by Hartland. Lowin took tho ball out, and the try was again entrusted to Hartland, but the goal was not allowed, Lewin having failed to make his mark on the touch line before taking the ball out. Soon after this the ball was again in dangerous proximity to the Club’s goal line. Stringer here caught it up from the back of a scrimmage and ran in over the lino, but was well collared by Johnston before he could touch it down. A maul in goal ensued, and quickly ended in favor of the club. Without loss of time the ball was brought into play again, and a series of well packed and hardly contested scrimmages ensued. Tho Club played up hard 'and well, but generally were forced to give way to tho superior strength of their opponents, who were all keeping on tho ball in capital style, Million and Boulton being specially prominent and energetic. Just before the close of the spell Anderson, who appeared to bo in fine form, and who had been making some good runs during the progress of tho match, got away with the ball, and succeeded in running over the Club’s goal line, but half a dozen of the latter side were close on his heels, and managed to save the touch-down. In the last spell the play was again principally in tho Club's quarters, and though the latter did their utmost to protect their goal line, and were successful in forcing their opponents back on several critical occasions, the Fifteen eventually secured another touch-down, and were also successful in the
